Hello,

I just discovered that the employee sitting next to me has a starting salary higher than mine, even though we are both fresh graduates and perform the same tasks. Additionally, I am the older one in the company who taught him everything he knows. This situation makes me frustrated as I will only reach the same salary he began with after two years!

I am looking for advice on how to communicate my concerns to my manager in a respectful manner to avoid escalating the situation.

First of all, comparing someone's salary is against office ethics. Please understand that all recruitment is based on qualifications, knowledge, creativity, and market value. There are companies where the subordinate earns more salary than their reporting manager. The selection committee must have identified some additional trait or capability in the newly selected individual.

Now is your time to excel, not just perform at a normal level, in order to earn higher perks. This is becoming increasingly common nowadays.

Dear Friend,

You have taken up the employment after having a discussion with the employer regarding your pay compensation. Upon your satisfaction with the matter, you accepted the offer and joined.

Even if you know the salary being paid to a person in the same role, you cannot bring it to the attention of management. Doing so may result in being labeled with 'misconduct,' as comparing salaries, perks, and perquisites is a matter of ethics.

In a market where products on sale are purchased at different rates by different buyers based on their bargaining capacity, one cannot hold the seller responsible. In this case, your colleague may have negotiated better or your employer may have found him more qualified and experienced, matching the market value.

You are unnecessarily dwelling on a futile cause. My suggestion is to refrain from such negative thoughts, as once they take hold of your emotions, you are lost.

If you are already consumed by these thoughts, the better option might be to consider quitting. Your improved performance can provide a platform for negotiating a better package. Be patient until that time.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Dear Friend,

Beyond the advice given by senior colleagues here, I would suggest that you simultaneously wait for the opportunity to showcase your talent and appraise the management for what you deserve as a senior compared to him. When your time comes, the management shall understand and accord you the necessary salary based on your skills, performance, and attitude.

Dear Mr. Perturbed & Angered,

How the other guy negotiated his package - assuming other things being equal - put him at a 'fair' advantage ahead of you. Bemoaning will get you nowhere. Between now and the next performance appraisal, see yourself outclassing and outperforming this guy, and then you will see 'things' including compensation rising in your favor.

Whatever your status today, if you continue your professional dedication, with commitment and integrity, tomorrow the results would speak for themselves. Compensation included!

Be of good cheer.
