I need your help in suggesting some interesting HR topics for public speaking. Audience will be SME owners.

Dear friend,

The track record of SMEs regarding their HR practices is very poor. Many do not have HR departments at all. For those that do, it often resembles the traditional Personnel Department rather than a modern HR Department. Many SME owners have yet to grasp the value of HR, viewing HR Managers as nothing more than glorified clerks. Therefore, the most crucial topic for discussion should be how HR adds value to the organization. This value addition must be demonstrated objectively, with the inclusion of case studies illustrating how HR can help reduce various costs associated with business operations.

If you were preparing for a public speech on HR, you should have selected topics that you believe are the most pertinent and listed them in your post. However, you did not present any topics. Your failure to do so, especially as a public speaker, gives rise to doubts in the minds of the readers of this post.

A person intending to deliver a public speech to business owners should not be hesitant with their words when posting on a public forum. Your post consists of only 18 words or 106 characters with spaces! This length is even shorter than the prescribed limit for an SMS message. Your post is exceptionally contradictory. The only advice we can offer is to avoid contradictions of any kind in your public speeches.

Thanks,

Thank you, Dinesh, for your reply.

My name is Shweta, and my company name is Saksham Universal. Saksham can help you in building the people-related strategy in line with your business and also execute as your partner, right from the induction of an employee to exit and everything in between. We are a 4-year-old organization based in Thane.

As you rightly pointed out, the HR positioning and challenges in the SME segment, the value addition is what we bring. Coming back to the anonymous status, it was accidental since I was exploring this site for the first time. Please accept my apology as it was unintentional.

I didn't list the topics, as I myself couldn't zero in on a few....so needed help. I will be addressing a few SME forums as part of a networking/marketing exercise, so I wanted something really interesting and compelling.

Looking forward.

Dear Shweta,

It is a good thing that you are going to address SME people on the aspect of HR. The subject/concept of HR is not a small one; rather, it is vast, and people around the audience may not find it attractive. It is too difficult to discuss in detail at this point in time. In my opinion, you should prepare your topic on the Scope and Functions of HR for SMEs. Also, discuss the benefits that boost the business and do not forget to highlight the downfall of a business in the absence of HR practices. Always try to provide current and recent examples of good practices only. It all depends on your skill and competency in verbal communication.

Wishing you a successful event.

Dear Shweta,

I have given a suggestion on the topic in my previous post already. Nevertheless, with the clarification in your second post, I recommend you speaking on "Value Addition by HR". I recommend this topic because underestimation of HR is a bane amongst SMEs. With profit as the only motive, they consider HR as a cost center. They do not understand how HR helps in shaping the culture of the company or how HR helps in bringing structure to the organization. Therefore, talking about the Role of HR in Shaping an Organization's Culture is the strongly recommended topic for the owners of SMEs.

Another important topic could be the establishment of a sound Performance Management System (PMS). This is because SMEs do not necessarily measure what deserves to be measured. Over the years in business, I have seen SMEs not measuring certain vital organization's ratios. This is because they rationalize their SME status and defer the measurement for the future as they grow. However, this never happens. However, talking about this subject is no easy task. One needs to have an in-depth understanding.

Thanks,

Dear Shweta,

Effective Performance Management System is most important. Along with that, kindly focus on capability building, Succession Planning, and People development programmes for Resources Optimization.

Whenever you explore yourself on any site, please reply with respect to Senior HR associates who are providing very value-added advice to us. We must always remember our Indian culture and strive to be continuous learners.

You can stress on Human Resources as Human Capital Management. Let those SME owners know how important Human Resources are for any organization. People are the Prime Movers, as our (Larsen & Toubro's) founding father Mr. Henning Holck Larsen said. In one of his speeches, he mentioned, "Buildings may be there, factories may be there, machineries may be there, but without people, nothing can happen." At that time, we coined a tagline "People are the Prime Movers."

As our professional friend Mr. Divekar mentioned, many SMEs consider HR as a Cost Center. A strong HR team is ideal for any organization if it wants to focus on profitability through quality recruitment, meaningful training, and proper placement of candidates suitable for each job role! Focus on this single aspect in your speech. You can certainly elaborate on this in greater detail.

Best wishes

Please focus on three aspects:

1. SMEs challenges
2. Technological advances (IoT, Design Thinking, AI, etc.)
3. Changing characteristics of employees (especially young employees)

And you could get a lot of 'catchy' relevant topics!
