In the Indian scenario, there is nothing new about what employees think about employee engagement. They believe that engagement activities are only the party, outing, birthday celebration, etc. However, it is HR's responsibility to help people understand what exactly employee engagement entails during the induction phase and all the types of activities that the company provides under this category. Yes, it is a time-consuming process, especially for older sectors. There should be a clear message about what employee engagement truly means.

"Employee engagement is a workplace approach designed to ensure that employees are committed to their organization's goals and values, motivated to contribute to organizational success, and able, at the same time, to enhance their own sense of well-being."

Normally, under the employee engagement activities, we include programs designed for the well-being of individuals. For example, health, safety, personal effectiveness, awareness sessions regarding substance abuse, financial planning, etc. Such employee engagement activities motivate employees, leading to improved attendance and performance. Through these programs, management demonstrates care for their employees. Some organizations extend wellness programs to employees' families as well by offering career counseling for children, stress management, hobby workshops for spouses, etc.

Shop floor employees are often a neglected group, and organizations should show interest in conducting such activities for them. Personal development is essential alongside professional growth.

As per my opinion for the manufacturing industry, HR should invite the family members of workers/employees and plan an event for them. Some competitions for employees' children should be real fun. The event should end with dinner/snacks. This will help the organization greatly by emotionally involving their staff. Also, you may plan outdoor games/competitions like a cricket tournament, volleyball tournament, etc. You may plan a picnic on Sunday for them.

I strongly feel that this is the role of the HR department to help workers/employees reduce stress.

I agree with BMKANAY's reply. At the plant level, more or fewer employees are not released at their shift timings. So, employee engagement due to shifts is quite difficult to manage. You need to take the help of the line managers at the location in aligning employees after shifts for their engagement. You can also hold a monthly engagement event in which you reward some employees for their achievements during the month to motivate other employees for higher productivity. Holding a small party with some activities, etc., etc.
