Dear Krish KP,

There is no specific rule that applies across industries. The performance cycle depends on the nature of the business and the type of activity the person or department is engaged in.

Long ago, during the days of personnel management, performance appraisals were done yearly. However, now they are done half-yearly or quarterly.

For sales personnel or customer service personnel, the appraisal is done quarterly. However, for those working on projects of longer duration, a quarter is too short of a cycle.

While the appraisal cycle can be half-yearly or quarterly, salary increases could be done yearly. There is no need to do them half-yearly.

Last but not least, whether it is a quarterly, half-yearly, or annual cycle, what you measure is also important. What if some vital measures escape the attention of management?

Dear Seniors,

I request your guidance in the following situation:

My organization is a startup, and we are about to begin the appraisal cycle for the first time. Prior to this, we did not follow the appropriate procedures as we do in the Performance Management System (PMS) cycle. I do not have any previous year data or Key Result Areas (KRAs) set for the employees for analysis. Therefore, the management has decided to make market corrections among the employees.

I want to avoid facing the same situation next year. My question is, how can I maintain accurate employee appraisal data for this year? How should I prepare the Excel sheet for the same?
