We are currently trying to learn and develop ourselves by studying various business scenarios.
There is a case study provided which I would like to discuss with you guys and get your inputs for my understanding.
Mr A has been working as deputy General Manager in India Steel Mills Ltd.
He has been employed with the organization for past 20 years and is considered a good performer.
The post of General Manager has been lying vacant for some time which Mr A has been eyeing.
However, the management decided to recruit someone from outside who has more diverse global experience.
In comes, Mr B (an IIT alumnus with impeccable track record) for handling the role for General Manager.
Mr B has an earlier track record of turning around smaller organizations but requires guidance in the current role.
Moreover, Mr B has been paid higher than the grade to accommodate his earlier salary levels.
This leaves Mr A in fury- How come a younger person Mr B has been brought in the organization?
Moreover, he learns that Mr B is getting paid astronomical amount for his level and demands an increase in pay level for himself.
Disgruntled with the management, Mr A approaches the HR business partner for confrontation.
Explain
a. What will be your role in this exercise (in confrontation with Mr A)?
b. What are specific data-points that you will require?
c. What will be your short term and long term actions in this case?
d. How will you ensure that Mr A is retained in the job?
e. How will you ensure that Mr B and Mr A work together as a team?

Hi,
Interesting case study.. I wish I had the time to reply to all the answers!
I personally feel that one is paid for his Ability and Willingness:
A person’s ability is his
Knowledge : Knows how to do
Experience: has done
Skill: is doing
A person’s willingness is his
Confidence: Can do
Commitment: Will do
Motivation: Wants to do
If there is someone with better Ability than Mr.A, I need to explain that in detail. I do this self appraisal exercise (a questionnaire) where in I ask a person to get his Ability X Willingness (Job Readiness) quotient and do the same for the person in discussion. The results are very objective.
