I got a offer from a product company and had 2 join in 2 weeks, the offer was given very quick in a day and was said to accept in 2 days.
I was trying to investigate about the company and could find lot of negative comments on different forums and also got chance to talk to some employees who also didn't gave a positive response on the companies growth, culture, managment and HR. first i thought the forums might be wrong then I verified from existing employees but this took me a week.
since I had to join in 2 weeks, after 1 week I send out an apology for not joining. I didn't mentioned that I did all this research and decided not to join.
Now the consultant send me a mail saying "They will blacklisted me from all product companies and also update my status on Google which make me beg round verification negative"
my question is can they blacklist someone like this ? can they update something on google and if so what and how?
Please suggest how I should handel this.

Dear BKR,
It is right of a candidate to choose the right job on their own unless otherwise you accept the offer in written that you will join.
In this era no companies use this blackmailing, if you not feel comfortable don't join.

Hi,
It is rightly said by Eswar, no one can force you to join any organization, and now that you have found out that the company is not good then why wast your time over it. Please remember if you are good nothing can stop to get a good job. So please forget them and start looking for other job.
Just would like to make a suggestion, before you take up any offer try to do some background check of the company. Now a day's it is very easy, with the help of Google. All the best.

Dear friend,

This is in addition to what previous member has said. What you have not mentioned is about your current employment. Have you tendered your resignation? If yes, with your decision of not accepting the job offer, have you withdrawn your resignation.

There is nothing wrong per se about investigating the company. "Look before you leap" goes the famous adage. You have adopted it but at the wrong time. You could have done the investigation well before accepting the offer letter. Nothing can stop you from declining this offer however, if you had done investigation before accepting the offer this situation could have been avoided.

In fact, declining job offer after a week after its acceptance, is perfectly gentleman's behaviour. There are cases wherein job candidates do not bother to inform also. They just switch off their mobile phone a week or so and they merrily continue to work in the same company. Now the consultant is taking undue advantage of this very gentlemanly behaviour.

Who gave you the offer letter? Was it from consultant or from the company? If it is from latter then consultant has no locus standi.

The consultant's mail have given you material evidence. If you have time and patience, then you may lodge the police complaint against that consultant. It would serve message to one and all.

The other option is to ignore mail from consultant and just keep quiet. However, if consultant calls you then you tell him to send a mail. Use the second mail as evidence and lodge a police complaint for threatening. When consultant calls you, you may record the call also to use it as evidence. Tell him that companies just do not black list the job candidates but the recruitment consultants as well.

Thanks,

I would be very interested in knowing how a person can blacklist someone on google or put negative points in it. Looks like someone is trying to take you for a ride.
The consultant is very much in his rights to blacklist you. It's his decision who he recommends for a job.
However, there are enough other consultants to whom you can approach for a job.
Google is a vast data bank. I wonder if anyone is googling for you and where. Do not worry about that.
The difference is in info tech industry. Nasscom has a database of employees blacklisted by companies. Larger companies check with the database before hiring.
As for police complain, you are unlikely to get help from there

As told by Banerjee no one can blacklist you in google, as such google is a search engine and if at all someone search your name there will be lot of person whose name will be similiar with yours, they can see the photographs with those name if at all who have uploaded through any professional/social networking site. Apart from that google will not give any feedback of any individual. Last but not the least if you ever find anything ill mentioned in any public site you can very well file a defamation case against the said fellow.
