As an HR professional, you need to deal with people - people with emotions, aspirations, sentiments, and feelings. You are expected to meet them, fulfill them, address them, and redress them. Therefore, you are expected to possess the following basic skills.
1) Communication skills - You should be able to communicate with employees about information, policies, and practices to avoid any misunderstandings. This helps reduce conflicts later.
2) Analytical skills - You cannot be mechanical in dealing with issues. You need to analyze the causes so that you can apply the correct remedies.
3) Listening skills - You need to be patient, listen to the employees, and be able to relate to them for sound industrial relations.
4) Emotional intelligence - This is the ability to empathize with the employees and understand their emotional well-being to make them feel that HR shares and cares for them.
These are important skills, and it is commendable that you have shown interest, as a student, in understanding the practical side of HR. Keep this zeal for learning alive.
All the best.
