Dear all
Welding on the reinforcement bars to fabricate any ladder / basket is unsafe in a safety point of view. I hope everyone will agree this issue. Reason for denying is welded parts will get rusted / oxidized and strength will be reduced. I am looking for little bit more technical explanation regarding this matter.
Pls come forward and share your view and thoughts regarding this issue.

Dear Vijay,
Not to use re-inforcement bars for ladders is "Good Engineering Practice"
However, there is no such legal requirement.
If weld joint is properly prepared and painted then rusting can also be eliminated.
Similar phenomenon happens if other sections are used for ladder. One has to have proper weld chamfers, and welding quality is to be ensured and no under cuts are allowed.
I feel the major hazard is "the re-inforcement bars (TMT Bars) are not plain. While person holds these bars if on a monkey ladder, then the hands can get injured" Instead pipes are recommended for ladders.
If you google for ladders, they are many manufacturers of ladders / baskets.
May be you can go through their design.
Hope I have made my point of view clear.
Thanks & Regards

Dear Sudhir
Thanks for your reply. It is a general practice to fabricate ladders and fix in the mechanical structures which are going to be erect. After installation of staircase, temporary ladders will be removed. It is not possible to fix standard ladders in all the structures especially for more than 12 meter height. As per ASTM standards, welding is not possible in all the rebars. As per IS 1786, carbon content shall be equivalent or less than 0.42% for guaranteed welding on rebars.
Looking for the opinion from our senior members.

The carbon content of Reinforcement steel & Mild steel is different. Hence, the welding of Rebars with other MS materials shall be avoided unless procedure qualification is established for the correct selection of electrodes to be used for such welding. Normally, ppl tend to use E6013 type electrodes for Rebar welding which is not correct. Moreover, the contact surface of rebar with MS materials may not be uniform and proper penetration of weldment can not be ensured.

Dear Sudhir & Pon,
Thanks for your inputs on this thread as well.
Dear Vijay,
As Mr.Pon & Sudhir explained well, Additionally i need to add something here itself they are using the same type of electrodes E6013/10 for welding the MS materials. I don't have an idea whether you are aware of MIL certificate for rebar may you can ask your QC personal they should have know about MIL certificates just go through it, may you can get some idea what type of welding rod we can able to use particular rebar.
I never been in this situation Mr.Vijay just i shared my view's hope its helps.
