I have worked as a People Development Consultant with Mercuri International, a Training Manager for Jurong Shipyard in Singapore, and a Licensed Education Advisor with MindChamps in Singapore. In the course of my work, I have observed and identified three fundamental key leadership traits of top performers in companies. They are purpose, humility, and discipline, which I have coined as the "PHD" of top performers. Employees with these traits are more receptive to learning and development; they have learning agility. Developing these traits in people before any skill training is essential for effectiveness. Do you agree?

Dear Lim Kwok Kuen,

Of the three traits, namely purpose, humility, and discipline, you can conduct the training on purpose. However, humility and discipline have to be taught by parents, especially by the mother. Corporate training is no substitute for a mother's grooming. She is the supreme source in instilling soft skills in her kids. However, there is a catch. 21st-century mothers should have time to groom their children, and secondly, they should also possess humility and discipline. Otherwise, how will mothers be able to develop these two traits in their children?

These are my personal views. Other members can contribute.

Training programs aimed at transforming personalities by trying to infuse new traits into them, whether by discussing concepts within the confines of a classroom or by engaging participants in practical exercises, cannot boast that the participants entered as ordinary individuals and left as leaders. To become a leader, one must be prepared to make a long-term investment in oneself. The success of such programs lies in identifying individuals who are receptive to change. Simply possessing quality or hybrid seeds does not guarantee a bountiful harvest if they are sown in unsuitable soil. The soil must be properly prepared to be fertile enough to yield a rich crop. Therefore, even if lofty concepts like humility and discipline are introduced, they may not be embraced by an individual unless their personality is conducive to receiving and integrating them.

As Mr. Dinesh correctly pointed out, the home environment, particularly the influence of parents or the mother, is crucial in shaping an individual's personality during their formative years. In my opinion, two other factors can also contribute to the development of a fertile personality. For those who lack supportive parents, there are instances where schools and teachers have played a significant role in guiding and shaping individuals, though this may not be universal. Alternatively, I have observed cases where a mature friend, exemplifying desirable traits, has aided in shaping an individual's personality. However, this process is long-term.

Self-discipline can be learned and practiced. It is one of the 17 principles in Napoleon Hill's Law of Success. Napoleon Hill is the author of the mega bestseller "Think And Grow Rich" and pioneered the idea that successful individuals share certain qualities. Examining and emulating these qualities can guide you to extraordinary achievements.

Self-discipline, or self-control, means taking possession of your mind. It is one of the greatest essentials for success. If you cannot master yourself, you have little hope of mastering anything or anyone else.

Some key learnings from the Law of Success on the self-discipline principle include:
- Self-discipline and the mind
- Control of emotions
- Self-discipline as a matter of adopting constructive habits
- Balancing the heart and the mind
- The power of the will
- How to begin

Quotations from Napoleon Hill on self-discipline:
"Direct your thoughts, control your emotions, and create a destiny of your own choosing."
"Self-discipline is the tool with which you can harness and direct your inborn emotions in the direction of your choice."
"When you can manage yourself, you are ready to start managing others."
"Self-discipline is the first rule of all successful leadership."

Hi KK Lim,

It's worth establishing and asking:

1. What are the values of individuals before asking what the values are for your organization?
2. Establishing individual values will provide alignment, enabling individuals to embrace and internalize organizational values closer to them.
3. Those three elements are assumptions. Having an assessment of the values embraced before the training will enable you to formulate the right interventions.

Remember, it is worth establishing the state of leadership (the climate within your company) before offering any training. Leadership is all about understanding people, knowing them, and learning and understanding about yourself.
