You can very well add a caluse for probation in your promotion policy. In case of poor performance you can have the following options:
1) provide for extension of probation by anotehr three months
2) Reversion of the employee to his original post/grade/ scale.
Howevr incorporate it in the promotion policy. Circulate the promotion policy among the employees. Refer to promotion policy in the apeplication to be filled in by the employee for promotion, if any. If you have unions, better enter into asetllement of promotion policy to avoid any future hassles or take them into confidence etc.

Mr.Vinay
It is very difficult to provide a considered reply on the query posed by you since it requires a look into various factors like what is their present psotion and what will be their future position on promotion and what are the nature of their duties so and so forth. It all depends up on the nature of duties assigned to them on promotion.

Since his designation is supervior and if he is drawing more than Rs.10000/- p.m as salary and he is really performing supervisory functions, then he is not a workman. B.Saikumar Mumbai

Ok.
My suggestion is
Include them in supervisor grade. There designation will be Foreman/ Group Leader. It is for future betterment.
Dont make probation grade. issue Pramotion letter to them including all terms & condition. Take acceptance sign.
Also take meeting & give clear message to them regarding expectation & Benefits, Purpose, Do's & dont' s. etc.

It is suggested that before promoting them, a requisition letter from each individual to be obtained, expressing their willingness to be considered for promotion, stating that it is not automatic and not to be considered as a precedent, just by way of experience. The benefits of internal promotion for employee is higher monetary benefits and taking higher responsibilities and stature in the working hierarchy. If there is any likely doubt about the performance of a person after promotion, he shall be told to carry out the higher responsibility for a trial period say 6 months, for which he shall be paid some additional allowance (a proportion of the increase) for the period till he is considered fit for the regular promotion. There is no change of category for him during the trial period, though he is paid some allowance. On promotion the candidates to be excluded from standing orders, which were applicable to them earlier.
