A promotion is the advancement of an employee's rank or position in an organizational hierarchy system. Promotion may be an employee's reward for good performance i.e. positive appraisal.
Before a company promotes an employee to a particular position it ensures that the person is able to handle the added responsibilities by screening the employee with interviews and tests and giving them training or on-the-job experience.
A promotion can involve advancement in terms of designation, salary and benefits, and in some organizations the type of job activities may change a great deal. The opposite of a promotion is a demotion.

Dear Narendra,
Promotion is given on the basis of qualification , experience & ability to work (smarter work),
So if your brother has these Quality , better than that candidate, so he should be promote, if he is no so according to me he should change THE ORGANIZATION, oterwise he think always regarding that,
other wise one option is also , should discuss with management what is the behind that,
discussion is always better than argument.[/B]

Hi
Unlike government organizations, promotions in private organizations is the consequence of your performance and potential to take higher responsibilities.
However in some organizations there is a flat structure and when role change, there can be upgradation in higher grade level. Practically promotion is not only the designation or title change but upgradation of your responsibilities.
The person should ask the following questions like
a) Am I performing as per the expectaions of the organization or manager? - Am I giving desired results.
b) Am I capable to handle higher responsibilties, if yes, does the organization recognizes that capabilities? have I exhibitted these capabilities during diffrent situations?
If you have a positiove about above 2 questions, then you need to ask the further question like "How can I brand my positive image in the organization?"
