Hi seniors,

We were having a biometric attendance system, with one set of biometric attendance reader machines (for which we paid Rs. 18,000) not working. Unfortunately, we depended on manual attendance only. The person who installed this attendance system is not cooperating with me properly. He just sits in his office and suggests everything over the phone. Several times I asked him to visit, but he is not ready to do so. The reasons he is giving are:
1) No guarantee was promised at the time of installation of the product.
2) We did not take AMC.
3) He suggests asking all doubts to the staff present during the product demo.

I am fed up with his answers. My boss is pressurizing me to start the biometric attendance system immediately. He is ready to pay for regular service/AMC. At the same time, I am planning to stop the service from the person mentioned above. Please guide me on the same.

Thank you.

Sub - Biometric Attendance System

From the details you have furnished about the present individual/firm that installed the system, the conduct of the people in charge of the system does not appear to be customer-friendly but, on the other hand, reactive. They should have convinced you about the need to take AMC and should have shown some proactive response if they really have any business sense. On the other hand, they appear to resort to arm-twisting tactics and try to make the most out of the helplessness of others. How can anyone have a lasting professional or business relationship with such people, especially in the area of electronic gadgets which develop technical snags off and on? It is better to look for a prudent alternative to the present one.

  • Dear Friend,

You may please register your complaint at www.esai.com. The Chennai-based Electronic Security Association will help you troubleshoot, and they will likely reach out to your service provider to seek an explanation for their unethical behavior. These unscrupulous businessmen bring ill fame upon all of us.

  • The definition of biometrics is best explained by understanding its nomenclature.

The word "biometrics" is derived from the Greek words 'bios' and 'metric', which mean life and measurement respectively. This directly translates into "life measurement".

In general science, biometrics has been included as a field of statistical development since the early twentieth century. A very good example is the statistical analysis of data from agricultural field experiments comparing the yields of different varieties of wheat. In this way, science is taking a life measurement of agriculture to ultimately determine more efficient methods of growth.

Biometrics technologies measure a particular set of a person's vital statistics to determine identity.

In the most contemporary computer science applications, the term "life measurement" adapts a slightly different role. Biometrics in the high technology sector refers to a particular class of identification technologies. These technologies use an individual's unique biological traits to determine one's identity. The traits considered include fingerprints, retina and iris patterns, facial characteristics, and many more.

    Types of Biometrics

There are basically two types of biometrics:

    1. Behavioral biometrics

    2. Physical biometrics

Behavioral biometrics definition: Behavioral biometrics basically measures the characteristics acquired naturally over time. It is generally used for verification.

    Examples of behavioral biometrics include:

    * Speaker Recognition - analyzing vocal behavior

    * Signature - analyzing signature dynamics

    * Keystroke - measuring the time spacing of typed words

Physical biometrics definition: Physical biometrics measures the inherent physical characteristics of an individual. It can be used for either identification or verification.

    Examples of physical biometrics include:

    * Bertillonage - measuring body lengths (no longer used)

    * Fingerprint - analyzing fingertip patterns

    * Facial Recognition - measuring facial characteristics

    * Hand Geometry - measuring the shape of the hand

    * Iris Scan - analyzing features of the colored ring of the eye

    * Retinal Scan - analyzing blood vessels in the eye

    * Vascular Patterns - analyzing vein patterns

    * DNA - analyzing genetic makeup
