Dear Seniors,

This is Bharat. Sir/Madam, I can speak, write, and even understand English well. However, I would like to improve my English language skills, particularly my vocabulary. Could you please suggest some good materials, magazines, or any other resources that could help me enhance my English language proficiency?

With Regards,
Mr. Bharat

English news channels, word games easily available on the net. Try to read English newspapers - The Tribune is best for that. Always try to think in English and carry a pocket dictionary for immediate reference.

Hi,

For anything you do in life, a clear goal/vision, adequate motivation/enthusiasm, hard work/discipline, and the ability to take risks/challenges are critical attributes.

However, if you are seeking help in improving your communication skills in a short time, I am afraid it is not so easy. I presume when you refer to communication skills, you also mean that you want to improve upon your English Language skills too. What you primarily require are the key attributes called 'discipline' and 'enthusiasm' with which you can achieve anything you want.

Your enthusiasm is the reason you wrote in at Citehr. The next test is to be disciplined and follow the suggestions given here.

1. My first suggestion is to read as much in English as possible. A standard daily English Newspaper and the Reader's Digest have very good reading material.

2. Make more English-speaking friends and make a determined effort to speak only in English, even if you keep forgetting words, or tend to stammer, or your friends tend to laugh at you. This will require a lot of willpower, but believe me, you will soon improve.

3. I would also suggest you try to learn at least 3-5 new words and look up the meaning in a dictionary. Then try and use these words in your daily work and in your communication.

4. If you still feel that professional help is needed, then you will have to attend English speaking classes.

5. You must also use WORD to type in your written communication and try to correct the errors that show up. This is a quick and easy way to improve your written skills. For example, there are a few errors in what you have typed in Citehr regarding your problem, which could easily have been corrected before posting it. Avoid all tendencies to use SMS language, short forms, slang, etc.

6. Finally, if you can, do visit my blogs listed below regularly and try to learn the new words in them and also be inspired by them. You can click on the links below for instant access.

Best Wishes

Hi Dear Bharat,

Mr. A Jacob has provided you with a nice guideline; just follow it eagerly. However, I would like to add one more thing: create a story in your mother tongue, visualize it, and create mental images about it. Then, incorporate some relevant English words into your story. By doing this, you will understand what I am trying to convey - you will never forget those words.

Thanks & Regards,

Hi Bharat,

I agree with the above posts, although I would recommend strongly against the Tribune or other US newspapers unless you wish to learn US English, which has very different grammar and spelling compared to UK English (which I believe is the English of India). The Daily Telegraph offers a weekly summary newspaper service - the best articles from the last seven days - very good and reasonably priced. Another suggestion is to pick up a copy of The Economist regularly - very astute political and state-of-the-world articles. Finally, buy a book of crossword puzzles (start with easy ones at first, then progress to more difficult ones as you improve) - I can remember learning French at school and being given the crosswords from Paris Match - makes you think!

Good luck,

Hi Bharat Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis will help you to improve your English Language. I use this book and found that it is very effective. Thanks & Regards Ajit Kumar

Hi Bharat,

I agree with Ajit. "Word Power Made Easy" by Norman Lewis is a good and practical way to improve English, apart from other suggestions mentioned above. The main advantage is that with one word, you can, on average, master ten words, as the book uses the taproot of the word concerned, etc. I had used it in my third year of my engineering course to improve my English, and it works!

There is no point in just buying it; WE MUST READ AT LEAST ONE HOUR PER DAY. In 21 days, you can see a difference in yourself (if you were reading at least one hour per day). You can supplement this by listening to English channels as suggested.

Happy Learning!
