Hi All,
I'm Girish, working as an HR Executive in an IT company. I have a doubt regarding professional tax. I'm new to this company, and in our company, we are deducting professional tax from employees who are earning below 10,000/-. However, I have learned that professional tax should be deducted from employees earning 10,000/- and above.
1. What is the exact wage ceiling for professional tax?
2. Does professional tax differ between manufacturing sectors and other sectors?
Please clarify my doubts.
Thanks and Regards,
Girish

Professional tax is credited to local bodies viz. Grama Panchayat, Municipality, and Municipal Corporation. It may differ from state to state. In Kerala, there is no ceiling. It is deducted slabwise based on the income. It is common to all sectors.

In Maharashtra, it starts from 2501/-. There is no profession tax for a salary up to 2500/- monthly.
2501 - 3500 ------ 60/-
3501 - 5000 ------ 120/-
5001 - 10000 ----- 175/-
10001 onwards ----- 2500/- annually in which every month 200, and in Feb, it is 300/-.
Before 2 years, it was like this. If not changed, then the profession tax is as mentioned above.

We are deducting professional tax from employee's salaries as per structure, but we don’t have professional tax certificate copy with. It was misplaced somewhere. Is there any way to check our professional tax certificate by online.
Require your advise on this.
