Dear All,

I have a query because someone asked me what is the PT amount deducted and my answer was 175/- for below 10,000 and 200/- for 10,000 and above, with a yearly deduction of 2500/-. Then he asked why 2500/-. So now, what should have been my answer.

Dear,

As per the rule in Maharashtra, the Professional Tax (PT) amount for those drawing a salary of more than Rs. 10,000 is Rs. 2,500 per annum. According to the slab, we deduct Rs. 200 per month, which amounts to Rs. 2,400 per annum. Therefore, in the month of February, we deduct Rs. 300.

Dear Rita,

As per Maharashtra State PT regulations, the amount is 2500/- per year for incomes up to 5000/- is nil, 5001 to 10000 is 175/- per month, and above 10000 is 200/- per month, except in February when it is 300/- per month. This may vary from state to state.

Dear Rita,

The Government of Maharashtra, through the Department of Professional Tax, has issued a circular regarding this matter. You can obtain it from your area's P.T. office. The circular clearly states that individuals earning more than Rs. 10,000 are required to pay Rs. 200 per month and Rs. 300 in the month of February to reach the maximum P.T. amount of Rs. 2,500 per annum.
