Dear Sir,
If u desire to do phd on soft skills then u have to term it as part of communication which is a subject in management and define it entirely so that any university will accept it. Include all the soft skills into one as in a systematic manner or you can term it in a name as i have done naming it as IMPRESSION MANAGEMENT which will create a subject to the students. Then all the management students will have a new subjects included as IMPRESSSION MANAGEMENT wherein all the personality development/soft skills will be there.
Its left to you how u will present the things in your synopsis and thesis.
Thanks for giving the opportunity to express.

Thanks Giridhar,
But what I am looking into is a Ph. D accepting soft skills as a subject. You are aware that many universities now included soft skills as a subject in B. Tech, and MBA courses. But then, why not a ph.d in the same subject, in stead of including in English or something else?

Dear Sir,
I am not saying to include in English, As Soft skills belong to the family of communication we can make it entry in this pattern bcos to get this subject as a separate in whole is not a small work it requires a whole committee setup and what not. So it is best to start as a part of communication and give recommendations as a separate subject.
Thanks and Regards

Dear Rao,
I am not sure of your background, as I have not checked your profile. You can see mine at <link outdated-removed> ( Search On Cite | Search On Google ) by clicking on "About us".
Soft Skills is being offered as a module. I do not know if there is any university with a Department on Soft Skills manned by sufficient staff. Even Management as a subject Group with a PhD in that field took a long time to get established when compured to Pure Science subjects (Please correct me if I in in the wrong).
I have searched the web to see if any scholarly articles are published on Soft Skills and did not find many. Even the ones I found are not on SS specifically.
As Giridhar has suggested, we need to come up with our hypotheses for a MPhil or PhD thesis and get it accepted, if our intention is to do a degree. One of the aims could be to study if there is any difference in the job opportunities or grades obtained between students undertaking soft skills course and those that do not. However, it could lead to ethical questions if we are offering to some students and not others.
Please see my post on Research Methodology (ppt slides attached) at CiteHr.
Have a nice day.

Dear Mr Rao,
As you may be aware that Ph.D in independent research programme on a common subject or in a specific field in which there are plenty of unexplored areas or research can be carried out. Doing a Ph.d itself cannot give a guarantee to master the subject. A soft skill is developed over a period of time by sheer practice in actual scenarios whether it is social or personal or official life. One cannot afford to say that ph.d is a passport for acquiring the required knowledge. That is only a research or original thinking from a new perspective on founded principle and theory.
The soft skill subject that is included in technical or management education is an opener to know what is the basics involved in learning soft skill. it is life term skill one acquires over a period of time unlike any other subject.
Therefore you are advised to practice in different life events or situations and observe the people and situations. That is better than Ph.D. Also tons of research work on such subjects without practice even a pinch is of no use under any circumstances.
best of luck.

Hi Rao,
I find your post very interesting. I am associated with the Training and Development team of one of the India's top 5 IT consulting companies and is keenly interested in soft skill and leadership development programmes. I also find it is extremely important to conduct some research on Soft Skills on Indian context. I do not know about any institution providing an opportunity to pursue research on that particular subject, but we can broadly classify it into Communication or Business Communication, which is a compulsory paper for all the B schools and Management Institutes. Moreover it is a major area of interest of most of the companies' Training Teams who are into customer service or direct sales. Almost all the models and protocols we follow on adult learning methodologies, communication skills, strategic leadership development and corporate etiquettes are being mostly indulged with western influence, hence dose not fit exactly well in Indian Scenario, when it comes to Customer Service in India with respect to "Human needs versus Business needs". So its high time people like us take an initiative to do some research on this topic, not only for Ph.D., but to enrich this important sphere of management education.
I would like to get further updates if you take any initiative for this topic. It would be a pleasure if I can be of any help to your research project. Please feel free to contact me. <palrakesh.india@yahoo.com>
Wish you all the very best.
Warm Regards,
