I am very happy to let you know, all of you, that I have received an offer from an OD (org. development) consultancy and am now associated with the GMR project for the development of an airport in Hyderabad. Our company's role will be to study the existing system and implement changes to enhance productivity and various other aspects holistically, focusing on Organizational Development and Change Management.

I have a few questions regarding my job profile, and I believe you are the right people to seek advice from:

1) What will be the visibility of this profile in my career if I decide to move to another company in the future?

2) How do other companies perceive my profile, and

3) What kind of position/role would they offer me?

4) Finally, is it a wise decision to choose and proceed with this job opportunity?

Please clarify these points for me so that I can make an informed decision and move forward.

Ravi,

I think it really depends on where you see your career going in the long term. In some walks of life, those coming from consultancies are seen as great go-ahead people who are independent and can think for themselves. In other walks of life, they are seen as pariahs. It also depends on the reputation that the particular consultancy has. For example, ex-McKinsey people are highly prized.

Hi Ravi, Forget about what companies will think about your profile! It is in your hands to make the company think that your profile is good. You need to project/market yourself. OD encompasses most of the HR areas and hence it is an excellent field. Just take the plunge and go with the flow of life! :) :) Geetha

Dear Ravi,

First of all, congratulations on getting the job. You have mentioned that you have received an offer from OD Consultancy but have not specified what your role in the consultancy would be.

Secondly, OD consultancies generally emphasize the following:

- Team Development
- Improving effectiveness
- Establishing a team of consultants or facilitators in the organization
- Managing change in the organization
- Conducting and organizing training and development programs, to name a few.

Why do you think that you won't be able to get a job offer after that, or are you worried about the next change? Look, OD is a part of HR. If you are getting a chance to learn, there will be various options open later in due course of time depending upon your expertise.

The roles that can come your way may include: Corporate Trainer, OD Consultant, Change Agent, and maybe a Generalist HR.

Just take up the opportunity and learn as much as you can; you will benefit for sure.
