Hi All,
Please help me understand if a worker has been called for specific training or for meetings after the shift is over or on a weekly off, is the company liable to pay overtime for the duration they attend? What is the legal procedure?
Thanks,
Raj

Dear Raj,
It depends upon the company's policy. There is no legality involved in this. But usually, the company provides OT to motivate the workers to attend the training program. However, it is totally based on mutual agreement with the workers. It becomes more important if there is any Trade union or Works Committee.

Hi Rajeev,
Thank you for your reply. In my case, I do not have a union committee as I don't have any union. However, nowadays workers are asking for overtime. In this case, management is asking to reduce the training programs for workers.
Anyway, thank you.

You have to convince regarding the importance of the training program to workers and company management. If you reduce the training program, it will have effects on the productivity of the company and personnel. Try to handle this issue very carefully and give importance to this matter.
Let me know how you handle the situation.

Dear Raj,
You can just reduce the number of hours for the training program and also change the way of training. Like other people are doing in their units... Most of the training programs meant for the workers are of short duration, say for a 1-hour duration, and it is provided half an hour before the conclusion of their shift, and they are retained for half an hour. In that way, production is also not lost, and workers are also happy not to ask for overtime. During that training period, serve them tea and biscuits.
