Understand what is causing the distress.
Believe it or not, people do not want to strike, they never make up the money that they lose.
Talk, communicate and be responsible. Find out what it is that is hurting, and then do something about it. Work with the unions.

Hi nal2lan,
Please find out the cause for strike if it is solvable try to communicate between the management and employee and i am sure people will get convinced if u take care and speak for them. Think on the cost which company loses if they go on strike per day. I am sure there demand will be much lesser than this. Be smart and act smart inorder to prevent the strike.

Hi
I have ahd the opportunity of handling atleast 5 to 6 strikes in my career
Can we avoid them?
It depends on so many factors. I have clasiified strikes in India under these heads
1. Real demand for salary increase
2. Working Conditions
3. Inter union Rivalry
In todays context strikes are less and easier to avoid by proper communication.
But the same strategy will not help in all situations.
But, Trust.......is the key to solving any relationship issue. Communication is just one too to create Trust. If the communication and action are in two different directions, then you can not create Truast and can not avoid a strike.
Do everything possible to build Truast. You can avoid strike

Dear Sparky, Ajithaa and Siva,
Thank you for shering your ideas and suggestion for the said above subject. THis is the first time I have to join with our company's trade union to solve this matter.
As you said, it mainly focus on:
1. Real demand for salary increase
2. Working Conditions
If you have experience for that, please show me how to prevent it, for example: do we need any kind of notice from company to inform that is illegal strike and will not be happended again; or any commitment signed by employees, etc.
I looking forward to hearing from all of you for this matter.
Thanks and best regards,

Hi
Normally after a strike when we reach a settlement, some clause is incorporated stating that employees shall npt go on styrike. It is also generally accepted all over the worls that employees during the pendency of the settlement can not go on strike for the sme reasons.
With my experience spanning 25 years and about 25 settlements and four after strike/lockout firmly believe that incorporating any such clause do not build relationship
Given a choice, I will not incorporate any such clause
