Dear Paddy,
As you are a .net developer, i request you to go in HR and ABAP-HR. Because only HR module in SAP is too complicate. its structure is too different comparing with remaining modules. one only module is HR using more infotypes in SAP. so simultaneously do the both. But you have to be a technical consultant in SAP, until you are not in HR Generalist. Have great opportunity. All the best.

Dear Paddy,
Let i will do the same.
As in your technical way. ABAP(Advanced Business Application Programing). SAP is developed in ABAP. Like c++,c,c#,java, ABAP also a programing language for SAP.
In SAP there three catogoreis 1.Technical,2.Functional, 3.Technofunctional.
1.Technical modules are
a. Basis(like network administrater)
b. ABAP(programmer).
2. Functional modules are
a. Finance
b. controlling
c. HR
d. Sales and distribution.
e. Material management.... and more modules are there....
3. Techno Funtional.
a. ABAP HR,
b. CRM,
c. BI(Business Intelligence).
Etc., and many are there.
One thing first. SAP is already developed ready use software for all countries and all type of business.
So in that HR is a module already developed. What you people will do, after doing this course?
1. End user(only entering the data)(like accontant working in tally).
2. Configuration.(As per the company need or client need doing customization.)
SAP HR consultant in IT company will go to the client place where sap to be implemented? and sit with HR person with that client company. understanding their need. And customising the module according to the company. Reports to be structured on the same and send it to ABAP-ers for writing the programme for the customization part.
If you are doing ABAP module then you can do the customisation for any modules like MM,Finance, SD etc. but you cant do for HR. Because as i already said in earlier post. HR module is complicated as compare to other. its very important module. After doing ABAP-HR then you can be programmer for that particular module. HR is a core area and ABAP HR is programming area.
If you want to be in HR module, you have to know the core HR area of the company. you have to be experienced in HR in any company. then only you can understand very fastly the HR module and get the job. So i request you to go and do ABAP HR as already you are programmer. then again you can update through new upcoming modules like e-recruitment(like job portals naukri, monster etc). there is always updates in SAP. try it first, then you will get rest.
its more than a ocean.....
all the best....
contact me if you need furter clarification..
