Hi All, Presently I am working with a small size IT company having headcount of 10-15 people.I am the only Hr here.

Previously I was working as a HR Executive with the largest broking house of India.I have worked there for 14 months. Prior to that I was working with the largest domestic call center as a CCE.

I have recently joined this company..Due to some personal concerns I had to switch on a very nominal hike. Now I am bit confused as I have worked with brands and now I have moved to a very small company..Will it have any negative impact in future. Secondly I am not enjoying working here as there is not much work. Recruitment process is also very slow.Team size ( Total no. of employees) is very less.

So i am planning to look for some better option with regards to my professional growth and let me clear one thing I am not looking for job due to monetary growth.I want to be in a big size company so that my intellectual and decision making skills remain sharp. More people, more issues, more queries and more skills development,

Seniors please suggest me and guide me If I am wrong or right. I am thinking of job change because it not too late..If i will keep on working there for 1-2 months more then I will have to remain with this company for at least 2-3 year to maintain stability..

Is it right time to change job or I should wait?

Many switch over jobs for monetary considerations only. Very few are switching over for job knowledge and taking challenging roles. This is a fact.
Changing job frequently does not add much credentials to your CV and you may be branded as job hopper. For anyone who have joined in a company, the initial 2-4 months is a stabilization period which may or may not be to their line of expectations. Wait for some more time and analyse.

Dear Pon,
I have already cleared that I am not looking for change due to Financial hike..Its all about Learning and Skills development.
I am not working for money as I come from a Businessman family.I opt for job instead of business because I wanted to explore myself.
I am not saying that this company is not good,,I just dont want to lose my brand value..Moreover I worked with 800 people and 125 people in both offices but here the team size is very less..

Hi Lavika,
As per my views, we are in to support department and we have to provide services to our employees. At starting of the carrier, the main important point is Learning means how much area you are taking care.
As per me if you will work for a Big brand then you will get a limited area only to work and perform, but in a small company may be you will look entire HR AREA.

size does not matter. I would rather be drop of water in a glass rather than being a drop in ocean. One should look into the roles and responsibilities and job knowledge.
e.g. I was in a Top 10 company having a turnover of 5 billion USD. Now I am in small company having a turnover of 50 million USD. I am comfortable with the small company, atleast my performance is recognised.

Hi Lavika,
I do not agree with you.
While joining this company didn't you know it is small company? Why did you join if you always wanted to work with bigger firm?
If it is a small company as HR it is your duty to introduce new policies and procedures. You can do lot many things here, there is lot of learning when you join a start up or a small team company.
You can do lot of trial and error as no one will question you which in return will enhance your knowledge.
But from your replies I feel that you have made up your mind to change the job.

Dear Monika,
I have already mentioned that changing job was just due to some family concerns..I have put this query for suggestions. If I had made up my mind I dint need to ask anybody.
My query was is it career destroying to work with small company..If I will have to go for some Senior profiles where I would have to handle 1000-1200 people..Wont this experience be minus point.
Simple question.

Dear Lavika,

Small or big, it is not a question in what type of company but then what matters what work did you do and what kind of case studies you are able to tell in your next job interview. In fact in small companies decision making is fast.

In addition to HR, you may get into administration role. Learn about purchase management, negotiation with suppliers. Trust me, if you master these skills, you will earn trust of MD than anyone else. As far as activities other than operations are concerned, try to become next to MD. It is possible to rise to this level in small company. For example, refer my reply to the following post:

The above is not HR activity as such, it is admin activity. However, nothing wrong in doing it if it saves company's finances.

Secondly, you may get into proper maintenance of Fixed Asset Register (FAR). Click the following link to know what happens when assets are recorded properly:

HR or otherwise, every functionary works to protect interest of the company. You may do it in whatever capacity you can. Possibly, you will become better than those who end up doing clerical functions of HR!

All the best!

Hi Lavika,
According to me there won’t be negative impact on your career if you can prove your capability and learn and gain some knowledge. You will have experience in working under pressure with limited resources.
As other senior members have rightly said, as it is small company you will have many chances to introduce new policies and practices in company. Here your experience working in big company will help you.
And as far as you have confidence in your capabilities & skills you should not be worried.
And I am surprised why this question have arisen after joining new company as nobody must have force your decision to join. You should have thought before that. And when you have joined you should now take this as challenge for you.
All the best

Lavika,
Who said people who work in a small company their career is destroyed? Company is small or big they do need HR, they do have query, they do want to do employee engagement, they do need someone to take care of grievances etc...
Please take this out of your head, I have seen people working in a small companies doing wonder in their field. You never know you may be the next.
Decision is yours, you can take a call.
