Can a Diabetic Employee be asked to produce a medical certificate of fitness to attend normal duties? Would like some clarity on dealing with such cases.

Symptoms of diabetes often include frequent urination, increased thirst and increased appetite. Therefore, diabetic patients can be given office duties. Since diabetic patients take time to heal their wounds, they may be given jobs that have less chance of physical injury. As the sugar level fluctuates for the person with Type I diabetes, they may not be given duties which require climbing heights or jobs that are physically arduous.
In India, Diabetes is a third killer disease. It is a lifestyle disease. Because of the improper lifestyle, it is spreading fast. It has reached even the children also. However, there is not to be dreaded about it.

@ Kenneth Dias Presuming it is a Type-2 Diab. you can ask a MC from such candidates, with reports on BP, ECG and Eyes (Diab. Retinopathy test)

It depends on the role and responsibility of the employees.
And for what purpose you are collecting medical fitness certificate ? To ascertain their physical fitness to do a particular job or just for file purpose for policy sake ? not sure. If it is normal certificate in today's scenario medical fitness certificate can be easily obtained from Doctors.
However if the nature of the work demands good physical fitness then company may appoint a Doctor and can examine the new joinees before joining and candidates may be advised to submit necessary lab reports ( like HbA1c) to ascertain their sugar levels .

As per factory act , medical/fitness certificate is mandatory for all employee so asking for some special person/decease is not appropriate but for diabetic patient you can ask some extra information related to their decease. in fact diabetes is also a decease just like other decease yes a Diabetic person required extra precaution for him, as like physically active, exercise, morning walk and control over the food.
