I hope all the HR's are doing good. Its been a long time since i posted any query on this platform. I just need to obtain suggestions and information regarding the daily tasks we junior HR's can carry out in the organization as i feel off-late I'm sitting doing nothing in the company.
Background: I work in a start-up where we have 8 employees including me and the directors. To be very precise there are exactly 5 employees. I am the only HR here and there are no seniors above me. Any kind of process i seek with my directors.
I understand that its a very small team to implement any practices or systems in the organization though what can be done i am doing. My director says fetch your own work when i do not have anything to do. I'm really not understanding what to do or what not to do in the organization to keep myself engaged. If you HR's out there can suggest me with valuable feedback and tell me what i can do it will be of great help. OR If anybody out there facing similar situation like me can you also suggest me what you do to get over this. Thanks in advance.

Hi Aishwarya,
Apart from HR tasks, though you are junior HR I suggest you to learn Business Acumen in your free time. As you grow, your knowledge in Business acumen will play a key role in your career.
Some HRs are not good at business acumen and they just manage the HR transactions alone and as they lack in business acumen they can't understand the company's business by which they won't be able to be strategic and create value to the company.
Learn more about your product or service and industry. As your's is startup with 5 employees, you can study everything about the company. Check the culture of the company, growth prospects, employees needs and so on.
Do your own research and seek some clarification or ask for more information to the director rather, asking I want to know this and that. Put some efforts and interest and influence people.
Know the future of the company, any expansion ideas. What support you render if you have to increase the headcount in coming years? Do you have your company competence? List out all HR activities (Recruitment, Performance management, Training and so on).
Basis your company's needs, identify any particular requirement from your company from HR perspective and develop and test that.
On the other hand, for juniors the support from HR seniors and the tasks you involve in will play a vital role in gaining knowledge. As you are the only HR and if you see limited growth opportunity you can think of progressing your career outside where you can learn and grow.
Best Regards

Mr.Thiyagua gave good inputs. With five employees, there may not be much work to do on daily basis. You can volunteer to do general administrative and business functions like looking after work of office infrastructure or writing business communications to clients and seeking information about business expansion plans in future and preparing a report on future talent requirements or organizing small events at office to engage employees on special occasions like Women's day or festival days which may require a very small affordable budget.Prepare mission statements and vision statements for your organisation after discussing with your directors, etc can be done as a process of learning by doing

Hi Saikumar Sir,
Thanks a lot for replying to my query. As you have mentioned "general administrative and business functions like looking after work of office infrastructure or writing business communications to clients and seeking information about business expansion plans in future", all these above mentioned functions are entirely taken care by the director himself. He doesn't share these information with me until and unless i should know about it. He thinks that i shouldn't interfere into that forte.
Apart from this, i do take care of talent requirements only when necessary, say that he gives me heads-up that we need such candidates during such period, then i prepare reports on JD and talents that candidate must possess. Also, like you said i do take care of festive updates and activities in the office. But this is not everyday process.
So i was confused about what routine tasks i can undertake for the organization and keep myself occupied. I do also research a lot about HR and practices. What apart from this can i take up?

Hi Aishwarya,
Below mentioned 3 suggestion:
1. Understand statutory (Labour Laws) requirements for your company and maintain the required documents
2. Prepare different policies for your organisation
3. There are many free online HR courses are available. Try to read & implement the same in your organisation, which will help you in your future.

You can also do the following tasks.
1) Conduct survey on employee engagement or employee happiness after taking approval of your directors
2)Prepare a mission and vision statement for your organisation after discussion with your directors.
3) Design a simple performance format for your employees and discuss employees' performance issued with the functional head.
4) Design motivating posters to be displayed on notice board.
5) Design a simple HR manual.
6)Update records and registers like leave record.
7) Improve employee communication by writing a motivation letter to them once in a month to be signed by the director.
8) Think of job rotation among employees.

Hr juniors can move and mix around with all employees at their work spots.
Meeting all employees like this gives a good feeling and a know of the work related issues.
Update all rules/laws specific to the company by reading latest amendments, court judgments etc.
The draft changes can be got approved by senior HRs and company bosses.
Updation of all records.
This job will familiarise junior HRs with formats, type of entries etc.
Scrutiny of all leave records to see how they are maintained and whether it upto date.
Begin with small taks and then upgrade knowledge and skill level.Interact with all stake holders and try to get a broad understanding of the flow of work and how the organisation runs.
Knowing the nuts and bolts will help HR in its task.
Apart from all this theoretical aspects of HR should be refreshed by reading latest material.
Reading magazines like Harvard Business review will be good to know the latest trends.
