Dear Sreenivasan,
To become a generalist there is no specific set of rules. According to me ,to have a general idea of all the Hr streams you will have to read materials related to all the topics related to HR, you will have to focus on all the aspects of HR. To have more knowledge about the subject try to work in a company where you can get more exposure to different HR activities going on there-dont stick to a particular work only-observe how other works are being done..
In short, it dpends on you that how much open you are to catch the informations coming from all the sources-known or unknown.
