Hi All:
Im facing a very common problem in my organization - GOSSIP.
I work for an IT firm strength of around 60 employees. This place has become a difficult place to stay in, and being the HR Manager - i can see that one day, all the employees who are out of Gossip stuff, will start quitting the jobs because of this. To some extend i have already seen this happening. It is becoming very disgusting and antagonistic environment here.
Can anybody help me understand how to tackle such situation. I have never experienced this in my 4yrs of experience.
Can i give them a warning notice - for breaking a policy of Workplace Harassment. Will this be a part of this.
Please Help. Its Urgent.

Understand the concern
Do some homework and find out how they can manage the time for the gossip even in the busy schedules? i doubt they are not handful of work....make them understand their roles and responsibilities and about the project deadlines....take the help of project managers / management in addressing this....
A gossip here and there to have a break is ok...but too much will effect the organization health....do a background survey and convey the message of work seriousness and anyone violating initiate a disciplinary action to set them right. Plan the activity and do the same by keeping taking the management into confidence

But the problem is that they have work, but if anyone talks to anybody, they stop working and listen to what others are talking. I told them on their face, what happened. They were like nothing, and started behaving as if they were working and were still listening what they were talking about. Instead i have seen them, stopping their work and gossiping in low voice, sitting on their desk.
When i addressed the same to the CEO and the PM's they had only thing to say, We cant stop this. We cant ask people to talk, they are not able to see the bigger problem here. Even my hands are tied here, and cant do much about this.
Please help.

:-PDear me, ok look there is a way but it has to be done tactfully, one pile up more work and do see that work that is given to a gossip group is given to the team members individually that way you will c that they would find it frustrating and then they would in the mean time stop thinking and thereafter if disscussed will become ridiculous.

Hey Thanks sujata,
As I'm in HR, the work allotted to these developers will be given by their PM's and it will be difficult for me to intervene in their development work. This will only be possible if the PM's agree.. which i don't think can be the case.

Hi Geeta,
My suggesion is you call these all ppl in the conference room and have a direct conversation you being an HR manager and pointing out on their negative points they will certainly feel seriousness of this and guess would start concentrating on the work.
I am even working the same level of company like you and HR manager....i always see if anybody is going beyond his role i make it point to call him and have a direct talk...see it is a mental game...when they will see whatever stuff they does is been notice by HR and will go to management...they will definatly change their atitude...

stay away from it and discourage the behaviour,warnings dont work , address the concerns and improve organization communication to employees. Gossips generally float around when the communication flow is restricted within the company. Have an open policy and ask people direct and straight questions.

The Reason Being People Are Idle And Donot Concentrate On Their Jobs..... Better Ask All Those Who Are Idle To Prepare One Project On Some Subject And Ask Them Go Give Presentation With Details.....
Some Exercise Of Backlog Works And Some Preparations On New Assignment Keep Employee Engaged And Concern Supervisor Shall Be Asked To Keep Employee Engaged Instade Of Idle..... Idle Mind Devils House...

Hey Geeta,
Now technology is improved so much.Why cant you suggest a webcam to ur tech team or anyother high tech camera device .Its human tendency when not monitored we behave our own way.So just fix up this will develop a self discipline & also act as proof to the top management.Place 1 in a comon area that will do. In many BPO this system is in practice.......
