Hi friends,
From India, Hyderabad
Please don’t think that it is a silly question. This question is melting in my mind for quite some time. In my nine years of work experience, I observed that the active involvement of the HR is only when an employee joins an organization and leaves it. I didn’t see much above this in their responsibilities.

Dear Bobkis,
Your question is not silly. It is so absurd. You said that you were working for 9 years. Do you work in a HR team? If so what is your designation and in which industry type are you working with ? Do check with the attachment...

Hi Mahr,
Thanks for reply. I saw your presentation. It is very informative and good for a presentation.
As you mentioned in your ppt, the main functions of HR - Attract, Select, retain, develop, motivate. If these functions are running properly, then why this much of retentions and layoffs are going. They are active in attracting and selecting but not in retaining or developing employee skills.

Dear Mr Bobkis...In the 9yrs that you worked you might have recieved salary every month, you might have gone on leaves-1day or many days, someone replaced you when you were on leave, you might have been unhappy with your job, salary, office environment, colleagues etc., you might have worked very hard and wished someone noticed and appreciated, you might have been wanting benefits apart from salary, you might need regular information on your job profile, salary structure, leaves, company policies etc etc, counselling on career growth, grieveance, requirement of training etc. right from your interview until you exit from the company remember at every step who was between you and the management and all your queries will be answered by yourself but ofcourse with the exception of an inefficient unresponsible HR.

Hi 28677c5420521383353edc6e6,
thanks for your reply. why i asked this question is, except getting monthly salary inclusive of some late comings and exclusive of my over time, i didn't found the role of HR. every thing including my leaves, appraisals, increments are all done by our project head only. Even when we need to get the approval of our project manager if we want to get a salary statement. Even if we have any complaint regarding our work, environment we have to complaint to our boss only, no HR. Now i think you better understood why i got this doubt.

Dear Mr Bobkis...since you worked as a production employee can we say the other way round...why is a production employee required? when the project manager is so able to perform all HR Functions then he surely must be able to do the job which he has been guiding you to do all through your career so can I say that what is the use of a production employee if he has to be continously look for support from his project manager...in your words"this question may appear silly but apart from helping out in production I dont see any need of a production employee since everything seems to be done by the project manager"

Hi All
The disussion is really getting ........., as people are discussing which department is better rather than discussing the importance of HR dept.
Hey i just want to tell that HR is a support department, and its main role is to support the organisation.
And production dept can be the main dept but can't run at its own. It need the HR to carry out all its vital fuctions.

@bhanu...let me clarify that the discussion is not about which dept is better...you seem to get the wrong notion....It pertains only to counter Mr Bobkis point of view as he seems to understand it better that way.

I think you misunderstood me. I really want to know the role of HR as it is very minimal in my office and there is a huge demand regarding the hr personnel in the market, i want to know what actually they do in the office. even the PPT shared by our friend mahesh contains little information.
once again i am clarifying you that i am not criticizing the role of hr.
