The notice period of 1 month is mentioned in the appointment letter. The company is forced to serve for 2 months as this is a senior position. Is the company allowed to do that?

Actually not allowed and company should not force anyone to serve until and unless anything is agreed and sign on paper.
If relation between employer and leaving employee is very good then if both agree then only it is right to serve 2 month notice.
90% employees leave organization because they are unhappy so naturally if they are leaving then he/she won't wait for 2 months.

Hi, By virtue of contract extension may not be required. But considering the role and responsibilities employee should also negotiate with employer and support the employer where ever possible. Just sticking on to the Appointment terms is not good for senior guys.
