The last working day will be the day your resignation and you are relieved from service. Though you have returned laptop, you would still continue to be on the rolls till you are finally relieved.

Hello Muskaan-Mahendru,
Handing over of Company material--in your case the laptop--is different from the Relieving Date calculations [which syncs with the LWD of the employee].
What would the concerned Manager do IF the employee informs very clearly that he/she would not be able to work from such-and-such date? Run after you? There may be some HR persons who may do that but don't expect all to do it.

Suggest be realistic & practical--you ought to have had discussed & arrived @ a mutually agreeable LWD between you, your Manager & HR. That would have even preempted this issue in the first place.
If indeed there was a discussion & your Manager and/or HR didn't agree with your request for 30 Sept as the LWD, then you ought to have followed the Rules & served till 5 Nov.
Further, pl remember that it's YOU who needs the Experience Docs for your career records--and quite possibly to be submitted to your next Employer too.

I would suggest that you call your HR or your Manager & resolve the issue amicably.
In the present day hiring scenario, most HR will treat resignations in a totally way--I know of cases where the resigned employees were cajoled with counter offers, etc. But at the same time, they wouldn't like to be taken for granted.

All the Best.

The issue here is of LWD.or an exit date to be put inEPF portal?
If its about exit date. Then no worries it is the obligation of the principal employer. In case of disputes on this there are others ways too to resolve the exit date issue with epf.
Now as an employee, I would always say that every employee should know that he should know the company policy regarding how one is given clearance from the company. Usually companies issue a relieving letter or a clearance certificate mention Last date of working, last salary drawn, dues cleared and asset returned and many other remarks, which is a documentary proof.
Advice - Go by the policy of company and get relieved on good notes.
