Dear Shimit..
First of all understand all the terminologies of HR by READING BOOKS and also use google/cite hr for more clarifications.
For practical exposure u have to meet HR persons(managers/executive etc) in person coz what u r doing is a project which has to be worthy enough when u submit in your college and will help you in future placements.
Get appointment from HR person,go meet them or atleast try to talk to them in phone so you will get some info on your topic.
Kindly correct the spelling of your Compitancy mapping. Its COMPETENCY MAPPING.Think u should be keen enough in knowing each and every word and meaning of HR.Improve your interests level which should help you in many ways.

HI Shamit,
I think u have got most of the details regarding competency mapping. here I would like 2 give u some inputs.

Since u have mentioned u'r project is on IR & most of my activities are in relation to these aspects I hope these points may be useful for u.

Specially in Industries generally there are 2 categories i.e. Managerial staff & other one is workmen or u can call Bargainable employees. Requirement of both varies.

For Managerial staff in order to map u should have the job profile for each positions. For Eg: If u are selecting Purchasing dept, define job profiles for Sr purchasing officer, call off engineer, vendor developer etc. You should have criterias of rating levels i.e. from 0 to 3 or 4 or 5 any of u'r convenient. 0 should be least & highest will be the top ranking...
Also, another important factor is, generally competency mapping is done considering 3 areas i.e. Based on Personality, Knowledge & skills.

All these 3 areas u should c in the mapping. But whereas if u c workmen mapping it's little bit difficult to do in all these areas b'coz in most of the companies workmen will be selected based on their skills & experience rather than education. For Eg, for a fitter/Grinder job employee working will be either just SSC, ITI or even lower. Hence specially in such cases skill mapping is done & gaps are identified.

I hope this small input may be helpful 2 u...

Hi Shimit,
I'm an MBA..I did project in competency mapping for my project..I strongly request u to read the book "The Handbook of Competency Mapping by Seema Sanghi". This book gives you all that u need to understand for a project work..actually this is a vast area which has a high demand these days. so its good if u get a proper understanding from the beginning. u cannot understand wats in practice without knowing the theory.so make up ur mind to understand the theory part first.then it'll be easy for u to apply it confidently in any company.
Regards
Anne
