I completely agree with this post. Being a flatterer here doesn't mean that you don't have to work and cajole your boss all the time. It means you have to play smartly. There are thousands of people who work hard and achieve results but still are not recognized for their work. How would you be different? How can someone choose you for a promotion among a hundred employees?

Bosses would choose you if you stand out among your colleagues, and it doesn't include mere hard work. It includes your personal rapport with your boss, your behavior, the way you appreciate your boss for his work and leadership qualities, etc. Of course, if someone excessively praises their intelligent boss, it's quite evident to him that his subordinate is trying to manipulate him. There is a thin line between flattering and appreciating someone, so it depends on how we approach it.

Dear Narayan,

Bosses are sharp individuals, and they usually "know" even before you can "trick" them what's up your sleeve and "on your mind." Once or twice, they may be "fooled" around, but remember - a job is a job, and business is business. To stand out, you have to be one step ahead with outstanding performance - helping yourself thus to "stand tall" - then there will be no need for flattering your boss.

Play it cool and go by the rules.
