Professional tax is a state tax levied by a municipality or corporation. The revenue generated goes to the municipal corporation. In some states, municipalities or corporations do not charge professional tax, for example, in Bihar, Jharkhand, and probably Delhi as well, no professional tax is levied by the municipality. It is similar to cess or chungi collected by the municipality. In my opinion, in a state, some municipalities may not levy professional tax. This tax is collected for availing the civic amenities provided by the municipal corporation. For detailed information, one should consult the municipal/corporation act of the respective states. The rates to be levied and the range of income on which the amount is chargeable by employees working under that municipality are decided by the states.
