In Sri Lanka we have 14 days of Annual leave and 7 days of casual leave which is compulsary.
Some organizations grant sick leave as well but this is optional.
So to my knowledge there is no issue with regard to leave.

From Sri Lanka
I am new to this discussion group but am very impressed with the learned exchanges and helpfulness of the group.
My company is setting up a manufacturing plant in Chennai and i would appreciate any guidance on market practice in the following:
Annual leave for workman - no of days
Casual leave - how prevalent / no. of days
Paternity Leave - no of days
Any guidance / help i can get is appreciated.
Thks in advance
May

Hi Shyamali,

While you have already got good inputs to serve your queries, I may 'broadly' add the following :

Leaves in India are essentially governed by either of the enactments : (State's) Shops and Commercial Establishments Act and Factories Act, ESI Act, Maternity Benefits Act. Your leave structure will be governed by the basic fact that your organization is a 'commercial establishment, shop or industrial establishment'. Accordingly, your leave will be structured.

The following types of leave are common:

Earned/Privilege Leave

Casual Leave

Sickness Leave

Maternity

All three are statutorily defined. Companies may pay more leave but the minimum are defined in the relevant enactment.

Progressive Companies follow several other types of leave to 'attract and retain' talent and be counted as savvy, modern and holding 'best/better HR practices'. Some are :

Sabbaticals

Maternity/Paternity Leave (beyond the statutory Maternity Leave)

(Higher) Education Leave

Funeral Leave (beyond ESI Act)

Birth/Marriage Anniversary Leave

Non-cuperation leave

Dating Leave, etc. etc.

Hope this broadens the canvas.

Cheers!
