He should file a police case. if the cops refuse to file a case, he should approach any union leaders or sit in "Dharna" outside the police station.
The owner should be humiliated and will tender public apology besides agreeing to pay compensation for the emplyee to withdraw the complaint.
In his lifetime, he will change his attitude.

Monica: Obviously what has happened was not the right thing...in such a situation, if you are still in touch with the employee who had to go through this ordeal, ask him/her if they would want to take any action or have they put it behind? If yes, then there are many ways to go about it. As for you....well you have seen what you had to see...there isn't much that you can learn from such leadership...hence look for a right opportunity....and move on in life...All the best to you

Hi Monica,
This is definitely a tricky situation. This is a typical behavior of people running small time businesses that grow with time. Their ideology of management however does not change.
Objective
The employee has already been fired so the damage is already done. Your objective is to avoid such occurances in future and to improve the work environment to avoid clashes between the management and the employees
My Suggestion
Wait for a few days to let the situation settle down then when you find him in mood where he is listening to you tell him in a gentle but firm manner that the morale of the employees is getting adversely effected because of the incident and ultimately its going to bring disrepute to his organization. Times have changed and such monarchical ways of leading people would only have a negative impact on his firm ultimately as employees would always have better option in the job market.Make sure that the message is short and simple.Avoid getting into any sort of an argument. Such individual's ego gets bruised at very small instances so be sure that you handle him with tact probably praise him(genuine praise i am sure their must be something good about him) before you share the feedback
Your role as an HR professional is to work in the interest of the organization as well the employees

Hai Monica,
How is the organisation struture framed in your organisation, are you the only one heading HR deparmtent ,or you also have a Head of Department.
What has been the reaction of all the staff in your organisation, make a survey of all the staff and take their responses make a analysis of Organisation behaviour expected from Management towards staff and Staff towards Management, prepare a Organisation code of conduct get it approved by the Head of HR or the so called Owner of the organisation( It will help him read the code of conduct practices in his Organisation itself).
Make a Huge Sign board( Even a Nice chart presentation would do) with captions on Anger, Good conduct, Having a Right Attitude for conducting good business, building a brand in Market, to be installed at the entrance of your organisation so that who ever( Management,Employees,Vendors, Customers) enters will read and this will help them have a impact on their mind to behave as per norms.
If still it fails..... You walk out as your career should be important for you not the organisation.
Thanks and Regards

Hi Monica
You are stuck in an unenviable position.
Since your boss owns the company, you can do little against him.
Working in such a company is difficult. Most noses have a temper and do shout at people. However, they rarely resort to violence. Anyone who resorts to physical remedies is not fit to be a boss.
I do not know what type of company it is, what line of business, etc. Mostly professionals will not work in such a place. Only those who don't have options will stay. Or i guess if the pay is really higher than industry.
If you are looking for revenge or to punish him, then the employee has to file a police complain plus complain with the labour court if applicable. But I do not know if the person has time to do this. It takes years for the courts to move.
I would suggest you find another job. Before you leave, tell your boss why u r leaving, and tHe impact it has on people working for the company. You may suggest to him to give a public apology. Then it's his wish to do it or discard.

Dear monica,
Physical assault in the office premises is extremely unbearable..... No Employer have any rights to go to a extent of physical violence even the employee commits any mistakes. If the employee really commits a mistake also, there are legal grounds to take the issue forward.I cannot agree with the one of the suggestions to go and advice a person like your aggressive employer. He definitely not going to listen to you if you go for a peace making discussion.
Better u quit the company where you are working instead of feeling mentally stressed under such inhuman aggressive beings...

Dear Monica i think you have enough suggestion from Citehrians you can add this along you can talk to your boss directly and approach him in very soft way like sir what happened in the xEmployee was not his fault i get to know recently as it was no way fault of him...Please reconsider him for reemployment he has his own family problems at once if he is fired it is difficult to manage him you are person whom the overall company inspires such a model leadership you are as you took the responsibility and slapped him i think slapping is not the right way sir if he is not eligible to do work let him transferred to other department or location if he has did some think wrong on that day the dignity of yours might be in problem as director kindly suggest or frame some strategies for our company sir....
I hope this approach may work monica...Any how you have decided to switch the job you can at least teach a lesson for your director????

Mr.Ravi ,
Definitely i agree on What you have said but think about Monica life do you think she should be in prison for this simple reason if all our Indians do all the way for small causes we change like fraction ism... If the X employee also thinks the same way he would have killed him in the spot.... For slapping it kills a person's life??? Life is precious only god can decide about it we are human we do not have any rights to kill...
