Hi,

Personal life questions are being asked to know about your personal background, your family commitments, personal priorities etc. Those questions help the Interviewer to evaluate you as a individual apart from assessing the technical skill sets.

Dear Banku Bond,

The job interviews are conducted to assess the candidate's personality, his/her approach towards the career, his/her suitability for the position, whether he/she possesses requisite skills and knowledge and so on. The time is limited and it is a challenge for the interviewer how to extract maximum information.

Against this backdrop, spending time on personal questions should be minimised. However, again much depend on the national culture also. In western countries and the US, asking personal questions is legally prohibited. The interviewers ask questions only related to the job, career etc. In contrast culture in Asian countries is a little different. Asking personal questions is not prohibited as such. Nevertheless, personal questions may be asked to the point where a candidate does not get uncomfortable. The questions can be asked on the residence, mode of conveyance, the estimated time it may take to commute to the office etc. However, the interviewer should not appear nosy and should not pry to know about family life.

Thanks,

Dinesh Divekar
