Hi guys,
I am a management trainee in a retail organisation. I have taken a project on competency mapping at the operations level, starting from the sales executives to the store managers.
I will be higly obliged if some one could at least provide me the basic steps which i can follow or probably use them as a reference.
Thanks

hi amit,
I am working in a manufacturing coomapny as an HR professional and my profile also includes competency mapping.....
the following are the steps which can help you in doing competency mapping....:
1) first of all you have to check out the designations in your company. if there is any annomoly in the designation in your company try to sort out that first.
2) Once you clear out the annomoly, you have to then take out the competencies for every designations i.e. you have to take out the competency for Asst. Mgr. (accounts), Manager (sales)......infact of all those designations who comes under management staff......
Note that the competencies should be related to their job only....
3) after defining the competencies, you have to mention the skills required for that competencies.....
Example: For the opst of Manager - Accounts on needs to have a good skill in numbers, counting, etc. etc.
*4) Once you do this u have to then list down those competencies in a excel format and thn sitting with the respective HODs you have to decide the desired level and the actual level of the rating...
5) once you have noted down thual ratie desired nad the actual rating, you have to then see where there is a gap and then that individual goes for the training....
exmaple: Assistant Manager - IT
Name:
Qualification:
Job Descriptons:
COmpetencies Desired level Actual level
Computer knowledge 5 9
Computer skills 9 9
Note that in the above example where the first competency is defined the desired leve is the level which an individual has and the actual level is the level he should have....if these two levels not match then that person goes for the training...
i hope i have cleared you doubts.......
also i am attaching a competency mapping form which i have prepared for my company....you have to do the necessary changes in it as per your company requirements.....
