It appears that you have serious misconception regarding "succession planning". By asking some software or excel sheet it appears that you are treating this major organisational intervention at par with account department's petty cash handling.

Thank you for the reply, but I definitely have this amount of knowledge that it is not account department's petty cash handling job (though cash handling is not at all a petty job and neither is any job petty). However I have come across many organizations and also some of my HR friends (who are also using this website) who are using succession planning software.
Anyways my question remains open - if anybody can help me with any system to generate succession planning.

Succession planning is not an easy task. Its not just all about "PROMOTING AN EMPLOYEE TO THE NEXT LEVEL" but, its about "WHY & ON WHAT GROUNDS YOU WANT TO PROMOTE AN EXZ EMPLOYEE TO THE NEXT LEVEL, FOLLOWED BY, IS HE THE DESIRED CANDIDATE EQUIPPED WITH ALL SKILLS TO MANAGE THE ELEVATED ROLE?".
You have to study much more than normal in all those individuals who may be considered for SUCCESSION PLANNING. One single wrong move/decision/selection can cost the organisation and demotivate the RIGHT CANDIDATE who was left behind....
Do study carefully, the JD(must be defined) of the DESIGNATION/POSITION and correlate with the skills/talent/competencies of candidates considered for SUCCESSION PLANNING.
