Dear Friends,
I am working for a software company in Bangalore. My doubts are ..
1) Do we have to take original relieving letter from new joinees?
2) Do we have to take all his/her previous employment relieving letter or only we have to take only last employment relieving letter.
Request you to send me your views on this.

Hi Anand,
There is no legal obligation to ask for the original relieving letter. However, to make sure that the employee was in employment and that he has no employer employee relationship any more, the relieing letter from the last organization he was working can be asked for. As regards all the previous organiztions, it is not considered necessary.
The employment history is given by the candidate before joining the organiztion and the employer has a right to make a back reference to ascertain the details in case of any doubts.
There are situations when the candidate is not in a position to give the relieing letter even from the last organiztion as the same has not been given to him. In such a situation after obtaining a written declaration from the candidate he can be offered employmnet, on the merits of case, by dispensing with the requiremnent of relieving letter.

Hi Anand,
Getting relieving letter or any certificates from new joinees is to ensure that whatever they said in their resume is true. This is also useful in finding fake experience.
Sometimes employees when they relieve they don't get the relieve order from previous employer because there could be some infighting or If new employer is going to pay more then, the employees don't even mind of informing the previous employer about leaving the job.
So, it is important to collect not only releving letter but other certificates too.

I feel it is better to take photocopy of the rellieving letters of all his/her previous employment, so that we can find our the gap in the employment also.

Hi Anand,
Cyril has clarified very well. To add to Cyril's advice, take a photocopy of the relieving letter and other certificates, verify them against the original. Ideally to ensure that the relieving letter is not fake, you may do a reference check with the employer just to be doubly sure.
In this day and age where opportunities abound with too few qualified and experienced people, chances of duping and fake letters have increased.
Its always better to be safe than sorry!!!
