Have you ever thought why should you pay Income Tax? Have you ever thought how the local authorities generate revenue and from which fund they spend money for infrastructure building, say roads, drainage etc? Do you pay anything for walking along a public road or using a public toilet or waiting room?. You pay nothing apart from the taxes you pay to the municipal authorities/ local administration. Profession Tax is the main revenue of the Panchayat/ Municipality/ Corporation. When you see a movie at a cenema hall, you pay entertainment tax which goes to the same local administration. This is paid for the entertainment you get. Like this you pay a small percentage of earnings you get from employer, the profession tax. The amount is very less, a maximum of Rs 1250 for half year. The rate may be different in different state. When you demand for more salary and better living, why should not the tax be paid. When you criticise the authorities for the damaged roads, let it be with proud that I do contribute towards it.

But Mr Madhu, why not pay a single tax as an individual (for development which never happens)... every factory or shop in an area pays panchayat tax for development which is reasonable becaz a unit doing business is paying tax for the development.. why shd an individual pay when providing infrastructure is the duty of the govt? An individual pays income tax and NOT that shud be end of it? Go to any place, rly stn or any place ... u stand in line for hours.. i hv travelled across AP, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat... what type of infrastructure is available for a citizen .... nothing...
Industries, Institutions, business bodies shud pay which is reasonable and understandable... why an individual shud pay ...?

Dear Mr Ramamurthi
I agree with your comments. What Panchayats/Municiplaies/Corporations have done for us? Nothing. There is no road, no drainge, no water, no street light. So what is the use of paying professional tax to these authorities? USELESS.

I believe Madhu is right. this is the only way to generate fund for public welfare. If it is not particularly in your area, may be other part of your area. Local administration have to decide according to its priority. If somebody can demostrate infront of the corporation/local administration for their demand, before doing all these they should reliase that what is their contribution towards this?

Hi
Even I also feel that there should be only one system where every liable person should pay development tax. The rate may be increased to some extent but in that way we will get freedom of paying varieties of taxes.

Dear Mr. Ramamurthy,
I can understand your feeling about bad infrastructure, but tell me how is it possible to ensure involvement of each one who earns money especially who are not under the fold of Income Tax? For those who pay income tax, PT is given deduction also.
There may be cities and villages not providing the required basic infrastructure. But that is not due to the fault of revenue system but due to the lack of enthusiasm from the administration. When we face a lot of problems just due to malpractices of some selected persons who are associated with big giants of India and who are really worth purchasing a sufficient number of panchyats in India, why should we blame only panchayats who seldom get funds even to meet the basic needs.

In some states, state govt charge profession tax from the outsiders who work in PSU & Private firm in their states. This is mandatory for the employers to deduct certain percentage (it may vary from state to state) of salary and deposit it with state govt treasury. It depends on the sole discretion of the state govt whether to charge or not. Some of States where this is charged are West Bengal, Gujarat, Maharashtra etc.

Dear Mr Rana
As far as development is concerned, i hv lived and worked in more than 3 states in mfg industries and situation is always the same... dusty mud road and pits and falls. Rural maharashtra was a nightmare.. and providing estate and infrastructure is the duty of a government... i think we shud one tax to cover all our responsibilities as a citizen..

But Mr Madhu, panchayats get their money from industries in their area as panchayat tax and there are govt funds allocated for every panchayat development... we re talking about prof tax an individual is asked to pay... there are very rich panchayats becaz of the no of industries in their locality...panchayat tax is paid by industries based on their built up area of the factory....
still i think there is no need for an individual to pay prof tax for development of the area.
