Dear All:
I would like to take your help in sorting out one matter in my present Company.
We have hired one engineer with 7+ yrs of experience recently.
On the third day of his joining- he had shown abnormal behavior at workplace. He had thrown the monitor, which is damaged completely. He took off his shirt & shoes and was running on floor. After sometime he set down and wanted to go home. We enquired about it and get to know that its because of hypertension and he is taking medicines for this. We have done background check also but there is no sign of such behavouir ever before. Now he wasts to come back to work.
Pls suggets me what should be our action. Many are suggesting to terminate or he needs to explain why. Pls suggest me.
Regards
Manasvi

manasvi,
In my point of view you can talk with any of his immediate family member and ask medical fitness certificate (from any psychiatry) to rejoin in job and continuous his work. in case if dont have any problem we can rejoin him, if there is any problem we can terminate him with the reason of his abnormal behavior which is sufficient.

Hi Manasvi,
Yes, I agree with your colleagues that he should be sacked!
Please get him checked by your company's authorized doctor on his behaviour and discuss the medical reports with him. We all go through stress and certainly not this behaviour can be condoned!
Also remember it is also the question of the safety of the office staff, eqiupments and environment.
Please assess the damage and recover the same.

The above problem can be sorted out by firstly asking for a medical certificate from his doctor , this needs to be addressed as his voilent behaviour can pyshically hurt
somebody at workplace. I suggest that till the time he is alright you can organise a work from home facility for him.As terminating the employee right away would not be an ideal solution

Dear Manasvi,
As far as these types of case are concerned it is a very peculiar situation for which you can't have any readymade material that how to handle such kind of situation. In my opinion his this behaviour has nothing to do with the hypertension, it is only due to the some mental disorder, which is very difficult to detect by means of a merely routine medical check up. Because these things not necessarily be detected in the first go. for such kind of medical examination a continous obervation for long hours, which can be streched to even few days is required. This is a basically a psycological problem rather than hypertension.
The best way is to talk to his family members, his family members must be aware of his peculiar illness. The only thing will be that while talking to his family members you have to judge whether they are hiding his illness or accepting his illness honestly.
Than try to convince them that this guy is not suitable for job, his behaviour can cause problem to others and may even injured them so it is better get him treated.
Also you can ask for the resignation of the employee amicably as mutually agreed to avoid any nuisance but if it does't work than ofcourse you have the second course of action i.e. TERMINATION.

Dear Manasvi,
This is a great opportunity for you to study his personality. We being HR people live with the people who has OCD, Hysterical disorders, paranoid personality etc..... but we need to understand them, talk to them, counsel them... test your own abilities with this case.....
Terminating is not the solution for this.........
