Hi,
Recently I got a call from a HR Consultant for some HR opeining with one of their client company.
She asked me few details but one question almost shocked me.
She asked me whether I drink or not.
I Said no,which is a fact but then she told me that their client had this mandatory requirement that HR person should drink(reason:She has to be a part of many events/party & their clientele is of such nature).
The company is among one the most successful & reputed business house from India.
How fair is this??
Can any employer actually put such condition for recruitment.

Otherwise in future she asked for more worse earlier.

I have also experienced same with a GEE PEE.
I was interviewed for the HR Head Opening in GEE PEE and the director asked if I ever drink in my life and situation arise wheather I will drink or not??

Yes - a few positions demand that you must join a couple of drinks, because of the kind of clients. Outside India, in a few places, people take beer - just like how we grab a can of coke. But that does not mean anyone and everyone would do that - sonme may say a big no to such drinks, and still join the party/conversation by ordering for soft / fruit based drinks. So they dont "look" out of the group.
I dont understand why everyone is thinking so - "HR drinkign and sanctioning leave". Where on earth have they requested the employee to drink "everyday"? Dont make such a huge issue out of a simple statement.

"No, I do not consume alcohol. If that is mandatory I am sorry - looks like I dont fit the picture. I am a health freak. I would liek to know if the Management would be fine if I chose to have a fruit based / non alcoholic drink if all matters is to accompany the clients in teh conversation. "
Here they may also want to know if you are okay with people around you, drinking.
You may tell them your opinion too.

Dear Komal,
There is nothing for surprise in that. It is only in your hands whether
to take the drink or not while attending the party. I am attending
parties for the last 10 years with fruit drinks / snacks only. You
can learn more and more in these environment.
I strongly agree with ash's view. But, be sure, you are stubborn
in your decisions. It is in your hands. You can get closer by a step
with your collegues in your Job by attending the parties.

Asha is absoultely right, there is no point in making it a big issue out of a simple statement. She is very much correct in the way and approach that she has mentioned, on how this could have been tackled and can be tackled by all HR professionals who are non alcohol drinkers.

As you have mentioned Head-HR, the position itself carries a better importance. It also differs from company to company. An head HR might some time given free hands on Project extraction and its value.
A question with that type is not bad. You should carry it better with respect to the post you have applied for. You should have told them that you don't drink, rather you don't have any issues with any body drinking or some kinda statements which shows that you are not abruptly narrow.
Just chill down yaar. Take it, wind it up...

Yes sir, In corporate world now a days its required to have some small glass of drink because in parties some seniors will insist for drink and your NO word will become EGO for them.....Chalta hey ....Take it as medicine but its required

Well, I perceive these kind of questions to be an integral part of the Typically Male Dominant Indian Society where working women are considered to be a mere object of desire or eye candy and a person who can be utilized in stuff apart from work...
Pardon me for my words but this kind of "Pseudo Intellectual Morons" and "Hypocritical Bastards" need to be punished appropriately (That they look up to all the females in a more dignified and respectable manner).
I consider that the biggest flaw in the Indian Society is the advent of the misuse of the Indian Working Woman at work place and I think that these issues need to be resolved at the earliest.
India has always been the country that has been respectable to the women in this country.
But, the biggest flaw that can be seen in this culture is that because of this wrong attitude, India will always remain a Develop+ING and not a Develop+ED economy.
The only option available is to change this attitude and to understand the best of the options in terms of women's liberation and correct attitude formation.
