SMS will not be considered as official/authenticated one. But you can send a mail from your personal ID. Secondly, when your reporting person is not picking up the call, you could call his/her sudordinate or to the HR and ask them inform them stating you tried to reach him/her and due to non availabilty you inform the second in line/HR.
Since its a two days of leave, do send a detailed SMS to him/her stating that you called him/her and since there is no response, you SMS/Text him/her.
Nothing is harm in the current world. Communication is more important than asking for excuses.
