Dear Seniors,
In my previous company, there was a rule that an employee can not work with his/her spouse in one company... even at the different locations... Now, I have joined another company... We are working on HR policy of our company... I want to know that whether we should hire them (husband and wife) or not? What are the positive and negative points in hiring them?

Hi Sana,
Even same problem is going on with my organization as well.. In my company, two employees are there who are going around... Sometimes, I also feel that what will I do of these people will get engaged in some personal matters in office.
Seniors, please guide on this...
What should be done... What is the harm in hiring a husband and his wife in one organization?

Hi every one,
This is interesting issue there is no harm if employees or the relatives are employed in one company because every company needs good talented employees for prosperity and growth of an organization. Become relative of employee, is not crime or offence and no one shall be discreminate on this basis just because his or her relative is employed or under consideration for employment and company suspect or hold some cynical view.
You may add following clause:
Employment of Relatives
The Company permits the employment of relatives provided one relative does not directly supervise the other in the interests of good discipline and to avoid conflict of interest. Examples:
•Husband/ Wife
•Parent/ Child
•Uncle/ Nephew or Niece
•Brother/ Brother
•Brother/ Sister
•Father-in-law/ Son or Daughter-in-law
It's bad HR practice to discriminate employees and restrict employees if they are relatives or become relative after marriage in same office. Nothin harms to the business interest is major issue. The above clause help to restrain unwarranted activities in office premises.

I do agree with Sawant here. Going around with another employee is there personal front. As an employer we have no rights to step into their personal affairs unless they cross their limits.
If we keep fearing of employee going around with another employees then u cant have two genders working together in the same organization.

We have a policy where we hire spouses. However, a spouse can be hired only if the position is under a different manager.
We avoid hiring spouses of employees for departments like HR, Finance, Marketing wherein there's a lot of confidentiality involved.

since most of our companies operate at ruler area which 'relationship' create at job site, hence such practice is OK as far as the 'spouse' shall not on the same department and not direct related or interconnect. For instance husband and wife at Purchasing dept. or husband at purchasing but wife at accounting.

Hi,
According to me Spouse working in the same company should not be allowed , as it creates more problems than it should reduce it. Working in same organisation at diffirent levels and getting diffirent treatment may create ego problems. Lot of discussion has happened on similar topic earlier in the forum , where Husband was at a director level and his wife was at junior level, and the celebration of their birthday's was diffirent as per company policy, where Husband felt bad that why his wife's birthday can't be celebrated as his was celebrated and on that he even threatened to resign from the company.
So to aviod such ego issues its better not to employ spouse in the same organisation. It is very difficult to keep personal relations and work seperate at work place. Most companies do not employ the spouse, and if people get married working in the company , one has to leave.

4- Eve teasing will reduce
5- Sexual harssment will be lesser or may be zero
6- Employee loyality can be generated
7- Employee involved in the job/organisation will be higher
8- Clarity of thoughts and discussion over an issue will be higher and ideas can be generated in more suitable ways
9- Job satisfaction will up

1- Ego problems may arise
2- Pilferage in the personal and professional life will increase

Above all hiring spouse is good practice but due care shall be taken e.g. no hiring in the same department, bosses have to be very careful while dealing such employees, etc.

Hi Sana,
According to me,companies should not discreminate people in terms of Relationships,if you look at this could be a retaining strategy ..people stick longer time...but point to be noted here is they should not be in the same department & reporting to the same RM or should not report to his /her relative....because this can create a bad impression in the minds of employee over all & can hinder the reputation...always there is chance of favouritsim & leakage of information in these kind of cases....

I agree with Sawant and Prathima, Upen's projection of the pros and con in employing couples are the current issues faced in the industry. We have this policy since 4 years in our organisation and have encouraged couples to join our organisation into different teams or business as to avoid conflicts in all respects.
