I have a slightly different take on this. While I do agree that this practice occurs and has been occurring for a long time, I know from seeing this first hand, that the fault sometimes equally falls on the job aspirant. When a person goes around showing that he or she is better than everyone else, (even if they are) at the outset, it's human to be wary or cautious of such a person. I've seen people being given chances, only to have it snatched away quickly before they can blink. I believe the 'hidden narcissist tendencies and reckless ambition,' can be applied to these 'talented people' as well.
My view is simply this: Don't doubt yourself ...sure..but don't make hiring managers doubt themselves initially at least. The Mid-Manager or Leader might be a little scared of your abilities. However, I doubt your CEO will be. Definitely exhibit yourself properly, but to the correct person.
