Dear Seniors, I need suggestions regarding my career path
After having 12 years of experience in the Manufacturing industry as HR Generalist shall I try to move into the IT industry?
If I try to move IT they will prefer HR candidates with Manufacturing industry experience?
What are the skills i need to get into IT Industry?

I just wanted to move to IT company which is having 5-day week working policy. Any suggestions or references highly appreciated.

Dear Jagadeesh,

You wish to change your industry, however, you have not mentioned what is your designation. Why you do not wish to grow in the manufacturing sector? Why the 5-day week is so attractive to you?

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how far the HR's or even the top management from the IT sector will accept you. Most HR professionals are clannish. They have a firm belief their industry is different and they wish to employ someone "experienced in their own industry".

For a while, let us think the opposite. Let us assume for a while that you get a job in the IT sector. Imagine a candidate with 12-year experience in HR in the IT industry applies to fill the vacancy caused due to your exit. Would your MD consider his candidature or turn it down for not having experience in the manufacturing sector?

Every industry has its dynamics. With each passing year, the professionals from the respective industry learn these dynamics. They develop general knowledge about the industry. They also witness the changes that take place in the industry. That is why it is reasonable to grow in the same industry. If you wish to grow, then why don't you change jobs?

Career growth just does not depend on the industry with a certain number of working days in a week. Career growth depends on a person's learning attitude, mastering new skills, good oral and written communication skills and so on. Have you made a career plan for yourself? If yes, then is it based on the SWOT analysis? Whether you change your industry or not, your career's growth will depend on how far your career plan is effective and how sincerely you implement it.

Thanks,
