one of the ways can b dat u assign different tasks to ppl which isnt a part of their functional requirements so that they feel burdened and quit themselves..
secondly u can adopt HIRING FREEZE policy which means not to recruit anybody for a specific period of time.again ppl will get retired and if u dnt hire mre manpower, the existing employess will feel burdened and will quit themselves
lastly i wud suggest relocate the existing employess to far of places or to anothr plant of ur organisation if it exists.Distance is a major barrier and ppl dont like to spend most of their time in commuting.
:P hope this info is helpful

Hi,

Reducing Manpower / Staff is the phenomenon which is experienced in every company. The job comes to be handled by HR. As an HR person, I too am facing the same situation. These situations need to be dealt with a lot a study and care.

These informations are very critical and need not be discussed with any one except the direct boss - CEO or HR head as any leakage would lead to a loss of confidential information.

I have implied it this way.

1. Check total positions in the company and the tasks assigned to each.

2. Secondly, inform the department heads that the management needs to carry out the retrenchment process as there is excess of manpower for the same job. This will alert all from the top to the bottom.

3. Start checking the employees attendance - late arrivals, sick leaves etc, employee behavior, employee goals. These are some of the checklists which will help you in scrutinizing the needed manpower.

4. Also check employees who are nearing retirement to relieve them by providing them the retirement dues well in advance.

5. Additionally, ask the department heads to give you the names of 5 people (if the dept. comprises of 10 people) who seem to be not able to complete the assigned tasks / have complaints - from peers / clients.

6. last but not the least as this is a very emotional stage, you need to sit with the employees (from the retrenchment list) and mentally console them informing that the decision has been taken by the management.

Hope i have cleared your query and this would help you.

Regards

Hi,
The only way to reduce man power is to say good-bye to some people. So make a list list of people you like least and fire them (HA...HA....HA)
OK. Jokes apart!!! Manpower reduction is always a political exercise ( political, because it affects different interest groups and changes current power equation of the organization)
So, to play this game fairly, one needs to, first of all, understand the current structure (underlying political structure) and then you need to collect some data to show why manpower reduction is necessary and how (on what basis) it will be done.
If you are new to all this, you will need guidance from an experienced person in the process.

Dear Prasad,
Make a list of people whom you want to sack out.
Ask them for voluntary acceptance of termination.
If result is zero, then analyse who is performing same type or similar roles. Reduce one.
Assign more responsibilities to existing one for few months.
These are all the things to reduce the man power from the management point of view.
Finally no way, have to annouce notice period for the employees in the list.
Truly Yours,

Prasad,
Most of the company's do shed some of its excess manpower. You need to tackle it very carefully. The first thing to avoid "firing is being careful in hiring". Ask the managers to give a list of the employees who are excess in the department and based on the list study the possibilities of transferring/deputing them in different centres. And if there are few who are not willing to get transferred , make them aware that there's no other option other than saying good bye. Speak to them and prepare them mentally to be flexible. Another way is to train them in different technologies. And the last option is to speak to them and give them a notice period of 2 months time to look out for another jobs. (what we do is , ask them to go on compulsory leaves for two months . We would be paying them during this period - this way, you will be avoiding the "gossips" in the organisation).
Best regards

Hi all,

I completely agree with Vijay that firing mostly happens because of changing political equations. However, sometimes they happen because of projects drying up and slide in revenues. In such cases there's not much to do except handing out a 1 or 2 month notice as per the company rules. People should be aware why they are being fired i.e excess manpower, non performance, non acceptance of transfer or whatever the case is. Good to avoid flimsy reasons like background check etc esp. if the person has been around in the company for a some time. Lots of big companies (IBM, Wipro etc) do this and end up spoiling the career of these people.

As for our company, we try to train them on other technologies before firing them because of redundancy. They are also given opportunties in our associate or partner conpanies. Also, no bench in my company, so no question of excess manpower. We hire 2 months before we actually need a person and all checks are done before the person comes on board. Firing is an extreme step and considered when nothing else works.

Hello Mr Prasad,
I would like to add my words....
Instead of reducing the staff you should concentrate to increase your business , which will generate work for them and also increase your turn over of revenue.
This is what I think
What you say buddies.!!!
