Dear members,
I am looking for activities that can be conducted in a workshop for building vision & mission statements for any organization, which would create interest & make the people more involved. I also plan to show an inspirational video at the beginning so as to create energy within the group.
Kindly help me with the activities & videos.
Thanks & Regards,
Anagha

Hi Anagha,

Let me share my experience of creating our Vision, mission and values system for my organization. We avoided outdoor location or a set up in a big hotel and all those stuff.

We arranged a meeting of all are decision making senior staff including our MD. I suggested my MD to present his view of his vision, mission and values as perceived by him. It was a ppt presentation of an hour where he shared how MVV(Mission, vision and values) is not only like a image of the company to the outsiders but also a goal setting methodology for the insiders.

Next we created teams and asked to create a MVV presentation of what they percieved of the organization. We met once again to see and brain storm the presenatation and identified key tems that should be a part of our MVV.

It was a successful event as our staff felt that the MVV was a part of what they look up to. We had some staff even teling me that a particular term was picked from their presentation.

You can try the same. you can use this link Lead India - The Tree - YouTube. It is very nice video on how one's goal can move the whole world.

Dear Anagha,

There are lot of misconceptions about vision statement, mission statement and organisational values. You need to create in-depth study and create suitable presentation.

Then create a brain storming session on designing vision and mission statement. Finally arrive at better vision and mission statement.

@ Jhuma Tiwade: You have done good exercise on MVV. However, have you done audit of this exercise? Do you have instances wherein top management lived with values? Do you have examples of top management taking decision in consistent with mission statement? Do you have example of top management taking decision to attain the vision?

I ask these questions because in one of my training sessions, HR manager of one IT company was my participant. His was mid-sized IT company. They did similar exercise and displayed all vision and mission statements on the wall plaques.

His company had problem of attrition. To contain this problem, management thought to conduct Employee Satisfaction Survey (ESS). In the survey, one employee gave a response that "do some introspection. What you do to attain organisation's vision or do you execute organisation's mission? You do nothing and ask our opinions!"

It goes without saying that management had egg on their face. Therefore, all this is trap in itself. Living with organisation's values is not easy. It requires lot of courage.

Thanks,

Thanks for Mr. Divekar for your feedback. We had indeed created our PMS system and the goal setting was done based on our vision statement. That was my second assignment. As far as values are concerned, the top management and the HR dept are responsible to ensure that the MVV are lived on by everyone starting from the top management. I have been fortunate enough to have seniors who tried their to live upto our MVV.We may have our own set backs but the support from the top management I must say goes a long way in creating an indeed a healthy organization.

Also we ensured that every staff had a MVV booklet. MVV is shared as a part of the induction. And most importantly our training programs were created around the same. We had indeed included our esteemed trainer's inputs on how we can ensure a healthy work culture.

And I am proud to say that we have a very less attrition rate compared to the travel industry.

I truly agree with your concern of doing things just for the sake of having it on our websites and brochures.
