Asking all HR veterans here. What's been your experience in a practical sense?
There is a lot of research available and a lot of material can be read on google. However, my question is how has it turned out for people who deal with it day in and day out.
Even more interesting would be the perspective of people who have worked both 5 and 6 day week settings.

Basically 5 days a week concept is more in IT sector and corporate offices .
In Manufacturing line its less seen .
Five days a week definately increases productivity . As because of five days a
week the employee gets more time to balance his personal life also he
is charged to come on monday morning to work after two days of rest .

Psychological effect is definitely there. If you are working 6 days, employees do get a feeling that they are disadvantaged vis-a-vis those working in companies with a 5 day week.
One part, thus, is the pressure some MNCs having a 5 day week has on those who do not.
The other part is how much off-time per week is optimum. I mean, if 2 days off gives better work life balance, why wouldn't a 3 day off give an even better balance? As in how do we know a four day work week won't increase more productivity than a 5 day work week?

As rightly brought out by some experts, '5 days week' applies more to IT Sector & to some corporate offices. Reason for the same is primarily the work - life balance. Closing time on the working days is based on completion of the assigned work, rather than on fixed working hours. Calling team members on the 6th day is a practice built into the system, to complete the unfinished task. People do that willingly, since everyone understands that finishing their work in the first 5 days shall make them earn a week-end to fully enjoy with their kith & kin. 5-day a week has helped many organizations in transforming their work culture and in creating performance driven teams & individuals.

Having worked in a 6 day (and often 7 day) week setting for the first 12 years of my career and in a 5 day week setting ever since, I'll strongly advocate a 5 day week.
It helps people unwind and come back fresh and ready to take on the challenges on Monday. Practically speaking, in a 6 day week setting, the person is busy attending to household chores on the day off and comes back even more tired on the following day.
But, as Govind Singh Negi has already pointed out, the organization needs to build a culture of delivery/output orientation to ensure that people willing put in extra hours/days if an assignment demands that. That said, irresponsible people will continue to be low performers irrespective of the number of work days!

We are in the era where it is said that we all have to work smart than working hard.5 days week is something that points towards working smart and 6days is considered people working hard.All we see here is that work-life balance plays a greater role in re-energising a person to start fresh with his work.I therefore feel that working less days in week should not matter till the work is worth of it.

5 Days a week implemented in IT and ITES sector since they are dealing directly with the international Customers.
However Still there are so many IT & ITES companies working on 6 days a week.
First of all I would like to let you know the strategy of Indian IT & ITES companies about 5 days a week.
They are working for 5 days a week however the working hours are Equal to the 6days a week.
So it wont affect any productivity or any issues in the Day to Day activities. In this way, company would achieve what they want and the employees would be happy to scarifies to work for more 1 or 2 hours per day to get the advantage of Weekends Off.
This is the simple logic and strategy of Indian Companies.
100% Sure that 5 days a week wont affect the productivity. It will improve the productivity and helps for the Employees to balance their life and it makes them feel comfort

As already stated by other's 5 days working is better then 6 days. Most of the companies where they are working for 6 day's a week the people are in holiday mood on Saturday, hardly any work happens on that day. Some may come late as he has personal work or go early.
Mr. Govind has made some valid points. Also Bijay rightly pointed out 5 days helps people to manage both the official as well as personal life.

For example, in teaching; there are few universities which prescribe mandatory 6-day work week. This is acceptable because the total no. of hours put in each day are on an average 6-7 hours. It should depend on the nature of work and the requirements of the industry.

Since I've lived with 5 days since I left school, I'd be partial towards 5 day a week thing.
But if you look heuristically, IT/ITes companies have a 5 day week and they are generally more productive than 6 day a week government departments. My vote to 5 days a week for all its worth.
