Hi Manibalan, You can decide the capacity of water tanks based on Table - 7, Part - 4 - Fire & Life Safety of National Building Code of India 2016.

Hello sir,
Thank you valuable information. Sir I have one more queries to you. How to determine the fire load demand for non residendial area (Extra high hazard area). Which basis fire load demand to be calculated. Please will give the answer.

Hi Manibalan,
To calculate the fire load you can use the below formula:
qc = Σmv Hv / Af
Where:
qc = Fire load density (MJ/m2)
mv = Total mass of the combustible material (Kg)
Hv = Total calorific value of the combustible materials (MJ /Kg)
Af = Total Floor area (m2)
Calorific value reference can be taken from Annex A-1, Part 4 of NBC 2016.
The above formula is not mentioned anywhere in NBC 2016. NBC 2016 is also silent on how to calculate Fire Load and how the value of fire load/fire load density can be used by the various types of occupancies for design and installation of Fire Protection System.
In the NBC 2005, there was Table 26 in Part 4 giving Reference Values for Fire Load Density. This had been removed from NBC 2016 without providing any alternative reference table.
So in nutshell, even thought you have the value of Fire Load Density, you don't have a standard value reference against which you can compare the same and take further pro-active measures in India. At the same time there are referral values available in NFPA Fire Protection Handbook - 20th edition (2008).
We are discussing these in detail during our workshop on NBC 2016. Do have a look below link for more details about the workshop. In case interested to participate, do let me know the same:
