Hi,
In general terms, Ex-Gratia is a term used to mean apart from the salary or which is not a part of the salary .
For example some organizations give some amount when an employee dies to his legal heirs as ex-gratia .
If this amount is being cut from your friend's salary , please find out why it is cut .

Amount paid as a matter of gratis is Ex-Gratia. Usually Ex-Gratia is paid in lieu of Bonus or paid to legal heir, when an employee dies. Why the Ex-Gratia is included in the salary slip is not under stood. Please refer to your appointment order or personally consult your HR department and try to understand the components of your salary slip.
