Dear Sonia,
According to me:
1) Vertical Promotion means going one grade higher i.e. if you are right now at Asst Manager position then you will go to Dy. Manager or Manager Level towards one grade upwards. it also depends upon the company's hierarchy (grade structure)....
2) Horizontal Promotio means going into another rank but in same grade. like for example if your company has AGM & DGM in one grade and if you are currently working as AGM then you get promoted to DGM wherein only your position title changes and not the grade.

Horizontal promotion does not change the level one works. Simply, the designation at which one works is changed, whereas in vertical promotion, the level of hierarchy changes. For example, in banks, there are different grades at which people work. If this grade does not change, it means promotion. If the grade changes, then it is vertical promotion.
